Mat Watson was really impressed with the Jaecoo E5 when he reviewed it last year, and some tempting lease deals make this electric SUV even more appealing. Here are five reasons to consider the Jaecoo E5 as your next car.

Electric cars used to be really expensive, but that’s not the case these days. There are loads of affordable EVs on the market at the moment, and the Jaecoo E5 is one I’d recommend checking out.

I reviewed this Chinese SUV late last year, and I was hugely impressed by just how much you get for your money. There are five reasons you should think about making the Jaecoo E5 your next car, plus three downsides to consider.

Remember, you can buy a brand new or used car right here on Carwow. And you can sell your car, too. We’re here to help you through every step of your car-changing journey.

1. It’s really well-equipped

I was shocked at how much tech you get as standard on this affordable electric car. Every Jaecoo E5 comes with a 13.2-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a surround-view camera, adaptive cruise control and 18-inch alloy wheels.

Stepping up to the Luxury version gets you heated and ventilated front seats, a panoramic glass roof, a power tailgate and LED headlights. That’s a lot of features in a small SUV.

2. There are some great lease deals

The Jaecoo E5 starts from just £27,500, making it cheaper than an MG S5 EV. However, I think this car is even better when you lease it.

Prices start from just £212 per month for the entry-level Pure version, and this is over four years with an upfront payment of around £2,900. By comparison, the much smaller Vauxhall Corsa Electric hatchback will cost you around £400 per month.

If you fancy the extra features offered by the range-topping model, it’ll cost you £274 per month, which is still great value for what you get.

3. It’s really practical

The Jaecoo E5 has a spacious and practical interior. The boxy body means there’s plenty of rear head and shoulder space, and legroom is decent as well. The 480-litre boot is a useful shape, and it’s slightly bigger than the Renault 4’s.

4. The interior punches above its price tag

When I first sat in the Jaecoo E5, I was amazed at how posh it felt for the price. The material quality is really good, with soft-touch plastics and nicely-damped switchgear. The large touchscreen is also responsive and packed with features. This car feels much more upmarket than a Ford Puma Gen-E.

5. It looks cool

Nothing about the E5’s design screams “cheap car”. There’s more than a hint of the Range Rover Evoque about the styling with the upright front end and slim taillights. It looks like a premium car, but without the premium price.

Drawbacks to the Jaecoo E5

As good as it is, the Jaecoo E5 isn’t perfect. Here are three things to consider before buying.

1. It’s not the best electric car to drive

Out on the road is where the Jaecoo E5 does feel more on the cheap side. It’s not terrible, but the vague steering and wobbly suspension don’t inspire much confidence on a twisty road. The Ford Puma Gen-E is more fun to drive, and a Citroen E-C3 Aircross is more comfortable.

2. The range is only average

The Jaecoo E5 will do up to 248 miles on a charge according to official tests, 50 miles less than Long-Range versions of the MG S5 EV. The charging speeds aren’t great either, topping out at 80kW and taking around half an hour to go from 30-80%.

3. Warning chimes

Lots of cars beep and bong a lot, but the Jaecoo E5’s safety systems are particularly intrusive. The warning chimes get so annoying that you end up just turning them all off, which kind of defeats the point of having them.

However, if you can ignore these pitfalls the Jaecoo E5 is a great way of getting behind the wheel of a posh-feeling, well-equipped and spacious SUV for not a lot of cash.
