The Omoda 7 will go on sale in January next year, and it’ll be available with both petrol and plug-in hybrid engine options. Here’s news editor Jamie Edkins to tell you everything you need to know.

This is the new Omoda 7, a Chinese SUV which will provide an alternative to the Volkswagen Tiguan, Kia Sportage and Citroen C5 Aircross when it goes on sale early next year.

Prices will start from just under £30,000, and for that you get a shedload of standard equipment. It’s this value for money which should attract buyers to the Omoda 7, although it’s becoming increasingly difficult for new SUVs to stand out in such a crowded market.

New Omoda 7 price and specs: what do you get for your money?

Prices for the new Omoda 7 start from £29,915 for the petrol version, or you can spend £32,000 to get your hands on the plug-in hybrid.

That makes it around £8,000 cheaper than the equivalent Volkswagen Tiguan, and the BYD Seal U is also just over £1,000 more expensive when compared to the plug-in hybrid Omoda 7.

Entry-level versions get a heated steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, a wireless charging pad for your phone, a surround-view camera system and adaptive cruise control.

Step up to the range-topper and you get heated and ventilated seats, a panoramic glass roof, a power tailgate and a 12-speaker Sony stereo.

New Omoda 7 design: is it bold enough to stand out?

Sort of, is what I’d say. Design is, of course, subjective, and I reckon the new Omoda 7 is more interesting to look at than the Chery Tiggo 7, but not quite as posh-looking as the Range Rover-esque Jaecoo 7.

This Omoda is sporting a few design details from other premium brands though, most notably that front grille. It looks a little Lexus-like, don’t you think? Those pointy headlights look a bit like the ones you’ll find on the Lexus NX as well.

Down the side you get a sporty coupe-like sloping roofline, and the rear lights have a pretty cool zigzag LED signature. It’s not as head-turning as a Peugeot 3008, but the Omoda 7 still looks smart.

New Omoda 7 interior and infotainment: it’s as you’d expect

The Omoda 7 follows a pretty standard interior recipe for the brand – very few physical buttons, a big screen in the middle and posh-looking materials which make it look a lot more expensive than the price tag suggests.

The central screen is indeed massive at 15.6 inches across – making it around 2.5 inches bigger than a Tiguan’s display. Pretty much everything in the cabin is controlled through this screen, although there are a few handy shortcut buttons on the centre console for some key features, such as your window defroster.

As for the interior design itself, it looks much posher than its sub-£30,000 price tag suggests. When you consider that there are versions of the Vauxhall Corsa which cost more than this, the ambient lighting and sweeping patterns in the doors look pretty impressive.

New Omoda 7 engines: no electric version in sight

The new Omoda 7 is available with two engine options, the first being a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol with 147hp, paired to an automatic gearbox. This will launch the car from 0-60mph in 10.4 seconds. That’s about the same as a basic petrol version of the Jaecoo 7.

Then there’s the plug-in hybrid. This uses a 1.5-litre petrol engine, paired to an electric motor to make a combined 204hp. This slashes the 0-60mph time to 8.4 seconds, half a second quicker than a BYD Seal U.

The PHEV will also do up to 56 miles on electric power alone, and this is as close as you’ll get to an electric version of the Omoda 7. If you’re after a Chinese electric SUV, you might want to check out the MG S5 EV instead.

You do get 40kW DC fast charging, allowing you to top the battery up from 30-80% in 20 minutes. That’s not an especially common feature on plug-in hybrids, nor is vehicle-to-load charging which lets you power household appliances like microwaves using the car’s battery.
