If you’re buying a new family car like the new VW Golf, it’s handy to know it’s actually big enough to accommodate your family.
We’ve pulled together dimensions data for the latest version of the Volkswagen Golf (called the Mk7), so you’ve got the information at your fingertips. It’ll save you breaking out the tape measure in the dealership, and it should give you an idea on whether the Golf will fit in your garage!
The dimensions don’t differ between the three and five-door versions of the Golf. Read our separate Golf Estate and Golf Alltrack dimensions guide to see the sizes of those longer models.
Golf exterior dimensions
As you can see from the images, all the major metrics are covered here. The Golf’s 4.3-metre length and 2-metre width are pretty much par for the class. It’s a couple of centimetres wider than a Ford Focus, for example, but a surprising 10cm shorter – making it easier to park.
|Width (excluding door mirrors)||1,799mm|
|Width (including door mirrors)||2,027mm|
|Height (with boot open)||2,006mm|
Despite its relatively short body, compared to a car like the Focus, good use of interior space and a long wheelbase means the Golf is a car quite capable of transporting four, six-foot-tall passengers.
|Front headroom||975mm (964mm with sunroof)|
Another score for the Golf when it comes to luggage space. Once again, despite its compact footprint, the Golf has a decent 380-litre boot with the rear seats up. That puts it in our top ten family hatchbacks for boot space.
|Boot space (rear seats up)||380 litres|
|Boot space (rear seats down)||1,270 litres|
Want to know how easy it’ll be to park, or do a U-turn after dropping your kids off at school? Once again, the Golf is par for the class here, able to spin the other direction in under 11 metres. Turning circle – 10,900 mm
Weight-saving measures in Volkswagen’s new MQB platform mean the Mk7 Golf is lighter than its predecessor. Kerb weight for the new Golf ranges from 1,205 kg for the 1.2 TSI S, to 1,395 kg. Two rather special versions of the Golf raise this total though – the all-electric e-Golf weighs 1,510 kg thanks to its large battery pack, and the plug-in hybrid Golf GTE (with both a 1.4 petrol engine and a battery pack) is a little heavier, at 1,524 kg.
The dual-clutch DSG automatic gearbox adds around 10-20 kg over the manual equivalent.
