Chery Tiggo 9 alternatives: rival cars you might consider

October 27, 2025 by

The Chery Tiggo 9 is a lot of car for a surprisingly modest amount of money. This seven-seat Chinese SUV offers 428hp, a 91-mile EV range and a never-ending list of standard equipment – all for just over £43,000.

On the other hand, there’s just one engine, the looks are rather generic, and we don’t yet know how well the car will drive.
So, before you put your name down for Chery’s flagship SUV, consider these cars.

Remember, you can buy a brand new or used car right here on Carwow. And you can sell your car, too. We’re here to help you through every step of your car-changing journey.

Chery Tiggo 9 alternatives: seven cars of a similar size

1. Hyundai Santa Fe

The 2025 Carwow Car of the Year, the Santa Fe tops our list of alternatives to the Chery Tiggo 9. The Hyundai is a big and practical seven-seater, and unlike the Tiggo 9 buyers have a choice of self-charging hybrid as well as plug-in hybrid models. There are also two- and four-wheel-drive versions.

The big Hyundai looks imposing and distinctive compared with the forgettable design of the Chery. With lots of standard kit and excellent real-world economy, the Santa Fe is hard to beat.

2. Peugeot 5008

Be honest, can you remember what the Chery Tiggo 9 looks like without scrolling back up to look at the picture? That’s not a problem with the Peugeot 5008. It has to be one of the most stylish seven-seat SUVs on sale.

The 5008 is more than a pretty face. There’s lots of room in the first two rows, and while seats six and seven aren’t ideal for adults, kids will fit comfortably. It’s a shame that the touchscreen is fiddly and the hybrid engine is rather noisy.

3. Omoda 9

Omoda is one of Chery’s brands, and the Omoda 9 is the equivalent model to the Tiggo 9. It misses out on the third row of seats, but otherwise it has many of the same strengths as the Chery.

The all-electric range is huge – even more than you get with the Chery – and it’s seriously quick. Standard kit is superb, too. It’s a shame that the infotainment is confusing and the semi-autonomous driving aids are so frustrating.

4. Skoda Kodiaq

The sensible money goes on the Skoda Kodiaq. It’s a really strong all-rounder with very few flaws.

One negative is that the plug-in hybrid model has five seats rather than seven like the Tiggo 9. Another is that the Skoda doesn’t come close to the Chery for power and performance. Otherwise, the Kodiaq is a very practical car with lots of space, plenty of storage, and a sliding and reclining second row of seats. It rides comfortably, too.

5. Volkswagen Tayron

There are cheaper seven-seat SUVs, but the VW Tayron counters with an upmarket image and a very stylish cabin.

The R-Line models have sporty suspension that’s a little too firm for comfort, but otherwise the Tayron drives well. Buyers can choose from petrol, hybrid and diesel versions, rather than having just one choice with the Chery. It’s a shame that seven seats aren’t available with plug-in hybrid power, though.

6. Chery Tiggo 8

Chery Tiggo 8

If value is a high priority, then one of the most appealing alternatives to the Tiggo 9 will be the Tiggo 8 it’s parked next to in your local Chery showroom.

The 8 is smaller than the 9, and nothing like as quick. However, it still offers seven seats and it’s much cheaper than Chery’s new range-topper. The Tiggo 8 is bargain-basement cheap, too, especially if you go for petrol power rather than the plug-in hybrid.

7. Used Range Rover

Yes, you really could own the king of 4x4s for the same price as a new Chinese SUV.

With a budget of around £45,000, a Range Rover from 2020 is within reach. The presence, style and luxury all put a used Range Rover in a different league to the Chery Tiggo 9. Then again, Range Rover running costs will be steep and you could face big bills if the car goes wrong out of warranty.
