Should you buy an Omoda 9, or one of its alternatives instead?

March 16, 2026 by

Welcome to our Omoda 9, a posh Chinese SUV that we’ve been living with for two months. Our social content producer Tommy Allen has been using it daily in that time, from Carwow commuting to grocery shops and everything in between.

We like it, in fact it’s excellent at certain things, but the big plug-in hybrid SUV has some fierce competition. Here are five other cars you should consider before you buy:

1. Peugeot 3008

The Omoda 9 isn’t an ugly car. In fact, it looks quite posh with its tall LED lights and broad grille, but it’s nowhere near as stylish as the head-turning Peugeot 3008. The Peugeot is a coupe-SUV that still has an enormous boot, but the interior is far better looking than in the Omoda and the infotainment is (marginally) less annoying to navigate. It’s comparatively priced, too.

2. Renault Rafale

Another stylish French coupe-SUV, the Renault Rafale isn’t quite as striking as the Peugeot, but it not only looks sportier than the Omoda 9 – it’s far better to drive on a country lane. Okay, corner carving might not be high up your priority list when choosing a sensible SUV, but seeing as the Omoda has a mighty 450hp it really ought to feel more composed around a bend. The Renalt at least feels planted when the going gets twisty.

3. Volkswagen Tiguan

The Volkswagen Tiguan is a staple family SUV, with an upmarket cabin, plenty of interior space and a huge boot. You’ll spend around £5,000 more on a similarly-equipped Tiguan eHybrid than you would on an Omoda 9, but the Chinese upstart can’t match the Volkswagen for badge pedigree.

4. Range Rover Evoque

The Omoda may be an SUV with four-wheel drive and plenty of grunt, but it can’t come anywhere near to the Range Rover Evoque’s off-road ability. You’ll pay a pretty penny for an Evoque in plug-in hybrid trim, but not only is it posh, it has the legs to get you down the road less travelled.

5. Chery Tiggo 9

A left-field choice, but bear with us here, because if you want the same excellent hybrid system and just as much interior equipment as the Omoda, why not consider the Chery Tiggo 9? It’s bigger, has more road presence and – unlike the Omoda – it’s a seven-seater, making it even more practical.
