I raced every BMW M car to see which is fastest

March 21, 2026 by

I’ve been running a BMW M5 Touring for about a month now. It’s insanely fast, and that got me thinking about the other cars in BMW’s M range. Which one is the fastest? Well I’ve gathered them all on the Carwow drag strip to find out.

Let’s take a closer look at the stats.

Remember, you can buy a brand new or used car right here on Carwow. And you can sell your car, too. We’re here to help you through every step of your car-changing journey.

BMW M2

Starting with the baby of the range, the BMW M2 uses a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged straight six engine with 480hp and 600Nm of torque. This is sent to the rear wheels only via an eight-speed automatic gearbox, and it weighs 1,730kg. The M2 costs just over £70,000.

BMW M3 Touring

Next up is the BMW M3, and it also has a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged straight-six engine. It puts out 530hp and 650Nm of torque, and this is sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox. This car weighs in at 1,865kg and costs from around £94,000.

BMW M4 Cabriolet

Like the M3, the BMW M4 is powered by a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged straight-six with 530hp and 650Nm of torque. It also has four-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic gearbox, but it weighs 1,925kg. That extra weight comes from the chassis bracing needed to compensate for the lack of roof, and this car costs just over £97,000.

BMW M5 Touring

Now it’s time for my car. The BMW M5 Touring uses a 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, mated to an electric motor to make a combined 727hp and 1,000Nm of torque. That’s a lot of power, but it needs to haul a lot of weight. This car tips the scales at a whopping 2,475kg, and it costs £140,000.

BMW M8 Gran Coupe

The BMW M8 was recently put out to pasture, but I reckon it’s still special enough to earn a spot in this race. It uses a 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 with 625hp and 750Nm of torque, with power going to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. The M8 weighs 1,995kg, and when it was on sale in 2025 it cost over £137,000.

BMW X3 M

Now it’s time for the first SUV of the day. Under the bonnet the X3 M has a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged straight-six engine with 510hp and 650Nm of torque. It weighs just over 2,000kg, and when new it cost £91,000.

BMW X5 M

The BMW X5 M has a 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine with 625hp and 750Nm of torque, and this drives all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox. It weighs around 2,400kg, and costs just under £140,000.

BMW XM

Finally, we come to the most controversial M car of the last decade. The XM is a massive SUV with the same basic engine as my M5. That means it uses a 4.4-litre V8 engine mated to an electric motor, and it’s actually more powerful than the M5 with 748hp and 1,000Nm of torque on tap. This goes to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox, and the XM weighs a colossal 2,720kg. It also costs around £155,000.

So those are the cars, but what will happen in the drag race? You’ll have to watch the video to find out.
