I drag raced the world’s first four-wheel drive Toyota Supra Mk5, and it has 1,000hp

What will win in a drag race between an R35 Nissan GT-R and a Toyota Supra Mk5, both of which have been tuned?

Both cars have been heavily modified, but this Supra is a world first. It’s been converted from rear-wheel drive to four-wheel drive, which means it should be in with a chance of beating the mighty Nissan off the line.

Let’s take a look at the stats.

Tuned Toyota Supra

The Toyota Supra has a 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six engine, which BMW nerds will recognise from the Z4 and M140i. It usually produces around 335hp, but this one is far from standard.

It has a much bigger turbocharger, upgraded internals, a strengthened gearbox and an ECU tune. The result is 1,070hp and 1,200Nm of torque, and this is sent to all four wheels. The Supra weighs in at 1,590, and it costs £135,000 as it sits.

Tuned Nissan GT-R

The Nissan R35 GT-R is a legend in the tuning scene. I’ve raced examples with 1,600hp before, so this car is almost tame by comparison.

It has a 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V6 engine which, as standard, puts out 480hp. This one has been tuned in a similar way to the Toyota, pushing power up to 1,000hp and 1,090Nm of torque.

This is sent to all four wheels via a strengthened automatic gearbox, and one of the best launch control systems ever fitted to a car. Beating it off the line will be tricky, even though it is heavier than the Toyota – tipping the scales at 1,740. It also costs £135,000.
