Drag race: new Audi RS5 takes on its predecessors with Mat Watson

Which is best in a drag race – a naturally-aspirated V8, a twin-turbocharged V6 or a plug-in hybrid V6?

Well to find out, I’ve got all three generations of Audi RS5 together for a quarter-mile drag race. Let’s take a look at the stats.

New Audi RS5 (B10)

This is the all-new Audi RS5, and it’s powered by a 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V6 engine which is paired to an electric motor. That gives you a combined power output of 639hp and 825Nm of torque.

This is sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox. Thanks to the plug-in hybrid gubbins, this car is quite heavy. It tips the scales at 2,355kg.

2024 Audi RS5 (B9)

The previous-generation Audi RS5 also uses a 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V6 engine, but it’s not got any electrical assistance. It comes with 450hp and 600Nm of torque, but it only weighs 1,695kg meaning the power-to-weight ratio is only 6hp off the new car.

Power is sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox, so it’s going to be a close race between these two.

2014 Audi RS5 (B8)

Finally we come to the first Audi RS5. It may not have turbochargers, but it does have an extra two cylinders compared to the other cars. Under the bonnet is a 4.2-litre V8 with 450hp and 430Nm of torque.

It’s also got all-wheel drive and a seven-speed automatic gearbox, and it weighs 1,725kg.

So the new RS5 is the most powerful by far, but all that extra weight could scupper its chances. Make sure you watch this week’s video to see what happens.
