The Maserati Stradale GT2 and the Lamborghini Huracan STO are two hardcore track specials from two of Italy’s most esteemed supercar manufacturers. This is Neptune’s trident versus the charging bull, with some serious pedigree on the Carwow drag strip.

Maserati is best known for making soft, cushy grand tourers though, so this should be a cake walk for the Lambo…right? We’re not so sure about that.

Maserati GT2 Stradale

It may ‘only’ have a 3.0-litre V6 engine under the bonnet, but the GT2 Stradale also has a pair of turbochargers straddling its cylinders – to the tune of 640hp and 720Nm of torque, driving the rear wheels only. Mamma mia, that torque figure absolutely monsters the Lamborghini.

At 1,475kg the GT2 Stradale is a touch heavier than the Huracan STO, even with its all-carbon fibre chassis and body panels. All of this exotic goodness doesn’t come cheap, though, with the limited-run GT2 starting at a mighty £273,000.

Lamborghini Huracan STO

Forget the Maserati’s silly little V6, because the Huracan’s STO’s engine is an absolute work of art. Nestled behind the front seats is a 5.2-litre, naturally-aspirated V10 also sending 640hp to the rear wheels.

The lack of turbochargers means it’s down on torque compared to the Maserati, however, outputting 565Nm. Is its small weight advantage at 1,439kg enough to offset the torque deficit? Possibly, but at least it’s more affordable too, costing just £260,000 when new. Pocket change, right?

With such different engine philosophies yet similar statistics, this race really could go either way. Can the GT2 Stradale’s extra torque provide the low-end shove it needs to get ahead, or is it too much for the rear wheels? Will the Huracan STO’s high-revving V10 engine give it the high-speed advantage?
