Drag race: new Porsche Cayenne Turbo Electric vs Ferrari 296 GTS

The new Porsche Cayenne Turbo Electric is a family-friendly SUV which can also do a sub-10-second quarter-mile. That’s supercar levels of performance, so I’m going to drag race it against a supercar to find out which is quicker.

Ferrari 296 GTS

I’ll be driving the Ferrari for this race. It has a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged V6 engine with a hybrid system, and combined you get 830hp and 740Nm of torque. This drives the rear wheels only via an eight-speed automatic gearbox with launch control.

It weighs 1,540kg, and the 296 GTS costs almost £280,000. The Porsche looks like a bit of a bargain by comparison.

Porsche Cayenne Turbo Electric

It costs £131,000, and for that you get two electric motors which put out a combined 1,156hp and 1,500Nm of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels via Porsche’s excellent launch control system, so it should be rapid off the line.

However, there’s a small fly in the ointment. The Cayenne weighs a colossal 2,645kg, and that could play against it.

While the Porsche has way more power on paper, the Ferrari has a higher power-to-weight ratio. It has 539hp per tonne, whereas the Cayenne has 437hp per tonne.

I reckon it’s going to be really close, and the Porsche’s chances all hinge on its ability to get off the line quicker than the rear-wheel drive Ferrari. Make sure you check out this week’s video to see which car comes out on top.
