Drag race: these four very different cars all have the same engine, but which is fastest?

BMW makes some great cars, but it makes some even better engines. The BMW B58 is a turbocharged straight-six engine that’s widely considered one of the best combustion engines made in recent times. Part of the appeal is that it can be tuned for use in some very different cars.

To find out which iteration of the B58 reigns supreme, we’ve brought together a particularly wide variety of B58-powered cars to see which one reigns supreme in a drag race.

Remember, you can buy a brand new or used car right here on Carwow. And you can sell your car, too. We’re here to help you through every step of your car-changing journey.

Morgan Supersport 400

Morgan may be best-known for building cars that look like they belong in 1958, but this Supersport 400 is the newest and meanest-looking model it’s produced to date. Underneath its classic body shape, the B58 engine is tuned to produce 408hp and 500Nm of torque.

It drives the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic gearbox. That’s all conventional enough, but the lightweight build and focused platform means the Morgan comes in at a featherweight 1,170kg.

BMW M240i

This two-door coupe is one of my favourite BMWs on sale at the moment. The B58 in this car produces 392hp and 540Nm of torque.

It drives all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox. It has a few more creature comforts than the Morgan – such as windows which stay open and door mirrors which stay where you put them – but the payoff is that it weighs 1,690kg.

Toyota Supra

The Supra was co-developed with the BMW Z4, so it shares that car’s B58 engine – here it produces 340hp and 500Nm of torque. It drives the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

It’s slightly less powerful than the BMW but it’s also smaller and a bit lighter, at around 1,500kg.

Ineos Grenadier

This is the wildcard, as instead of being a sports car it’s a hardcore off-roader. Still, the Grenadier has a tuned B58 under the bonnet making it the most powerful car here, with 460hp and a whopping 650Nm of torque.

It drives all four wheels via – you guessed it – an eight-speed automatic gearbox. Even though this one has been substantially lightened over the standard car, it still weighs in at 2,480kg.
