Drag race: is a seven-seat family SUV faster than a thoroughbred supercar?
November 04, 2026 by Mat Watson
It’s really easy to make a powerful electric car – simply put in a powerful electric motor. The ease of packaging this, versus a massively tuned and high-output engine, means that in 2026 some of the most powerful cars around are outwardly sensible, family-friendly SUVs.
But does all that power mean they’re any good in a drag race? To find out, I’m pitting the Volvo EX90 against a supercar legend – a Lamborghini Murcielago. Let’s take a look at the stats of these surprisingly similar cars.
Remember, you can buy a brand new or used car right here on Carwow. And you can sell your car, too. We’re here to help you through every step of your car-changing journey.
2007 Lamborghini Murcielago

The Lamborghini Murcielago was produced between 2001 and 2010 as a successor to the Diablo. This example comes from 2007. Mid-mounted, you’ll find a glorious 6.5-litre naturally-aspirated V12 engine that produces 640hp and 660Nm of torque.
That power goes to all four wheels via a six-speed robotised manual gearbox, and it weighs in at 1,765kg. If you wanted a car like this today you’d have to part with about £500,000.
New Volvo EX90

The Volvo EX90 could hardly be any more different – instead of a two-seat supercar, it’s a seven-seater family SUV. The sensible body hides a secret, though, as ours is the Twin Motor Performance model. That means an electric motor on each axle producing a total of 680hp and a whopping 870Nm of torque – 210Nm more than the Lambo.
There’s a kicker, though, because the huge battery pack means this car weighs a massive 2,725kg – and loaded up with seven adults, it’s well over three tonnes.
So which car will come out on top – do a couple of decades of progress really mean the family car of 2026 can beat the supercar of 2007 in a race? Watch the video to find out.
