I drag raced every generation of Porsche 911 GT3 RS to see which is the fastest

For driving thrills, both on the road and on track, I don’t think you can beat the Porsche 911 GT3 RS. I love them so much that I actually bought one a couple of years ago, and it’s still one of the most exciting cars I’ve ever owned.
I love the precise steering and sublime suspension setup, as well as the noise from that screaming naturally-aspirated engine. These cars are designed for the racetrack, but I want to find out which generation is quickest in a straight line.
It’ll be an interesting race, because launching a rear-wheel drive, track-focussed supercar like this will be a real test of both the cars and our skills. Let’s take a look at the stats.
Remember, you can buy a brand new or used car right here on Carwow. And you can sell your car, too. We’re here to help you through every step of your car-changing journey.
Porsche 911 GT3 RS drag race: the stats
Every one of these cars is rear-wheel drive and has a rear-mounted naturally-aspirated flat-six engine, but they’re all subtly different.

The OG 996.2 has a 3.6-litre engine with 381hp and 385Nm of torque. This is hooked up to a six-speed manual gearbox, and the car weighs in at 1,360kg. It cost around £77,000 when new, but today this car is worth £180,000.

Next up is the 997.2 911 GT3 RS, which has a 3.8-litre engine putting out 450hp and 430Nm of torque. It also has a six-speed manual gearbox, and this 911 tips the scales at 1,370kg. The original owner would’ve paid £105,000 for it back in 2010, but now it’s worth £200,000.

The 991.2 has a 4.0-litre engine which produces 520hp and 470Nm of torque, and it’s the first car here to use a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. That’ll certainly help with the initial launch. It has gained some weight compared to the first two cars though, coming in at 1,443kg. In 2019 it cost £141,000, but now this 911 is worth £190,000.

Finally we come to the latest car – the 992.1. It also has a 4.0-litre engine, but it makes 525hp and 465Nm of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a seven-speed automatic gearbox, and it’s actually lighter than its predecessor at 1,428kg. It started from £192,000 when new, but this car with options cost £250,000.
So what will happen?
It’s tough to say really. The two oldest cars both use manual gearboxes, which will make them harder to get off the line quickly. That said, they’re also around 80kg lighter than the later two.
My money is still on the latest car though. It’s the most powerful, and it’s lighter than the 991.2. Anything could happen though, so make sure you watch the video to see the results.
