After a two-year hiatus, Jaguar is finally revealing its new electric luxury saloon in September this year. The styling will be very similar to the Type 00 concept from 2023, and engineers have been driving classic models to make sure this car feels like a proper Jag.

Back in 2024, Jaguar revealed the most controversial concept car we’ve seen in a very long time. The Type 00 looked wild, and it was accompanied by an equally bold rebrand campaign.

In the 18 months or so since then Jaguar has been hard at work developing its new electric GT car, and the full reveal is coming in September. Here’s everything we know about the Jaguar four-door GT car so far.

Jaguar four-door GT coming in September

Jaguar stopped making cars at the end of 2024 as it geared up for its all-electric future, something we’ve never seen another car manufacturer do. Since then we’ve seen the new four-door GT out testing a few times, but now we finally have a timeframe for the reveal.

The covers will come off the production car in September this year, with sales expected to start in 2027. There are no official details around pricing just yet, but it’ll almost certainly be a six-figure sum.

News of Jaguar’s new electric car comes as Bentley recently announced it would be scaling back its EV goals due to lack of customer demand, according to a report from Auto Express. The “Urban SUV” is still coming in 2027, but the four other models Bentley was developing have been put on the back burner.

It’s also been reported that Rolls Royce has softened its goal to be an EV-only brand by 2030, saying it will continue to sell V12-engined cars as long as there is demand.

With all this uncertainty around the luxury EV market, it’ll be interesting to see how well the Jaguar four-door GT sells.

New Jaguar Type 00 design

Pictured below is the Jaguar Type 00. This concept car was revealed at the end of 2024, and Jaguar said the production version would look pretty much identical.

These camouflaged teasers show some pretty obvious differences, most notably the extra pair of doors, but the overall shape appears to be very similar. It still has an imposing long bonnet, which is entirely a stylistic choice because there’s no engine under there, and it still has that bluff front end from the Type 00.

The concept car also has no rear window, but it’s hard to tell if this production car has one or not. You can see the slim LED taillights poking through the wrap though, and if it’s anything like the concept then they’ll be integrated into some strakes which span the rear of the car.

Jaguar four-door GT batteries, motors and performance

Exact technical details are thin on the ground, but the Jaguar four-door GT will be based on an all-new collection of parts. This is what Jaguar has been working on for the past two years, and it’s called the “Jaguar Electric Architecture” (JEA).

There won’t be any parts sharing with the new Range Rover EV, despite the two brands being part of the same family. The Jaguar four-door GT will have three electric motors with over 1,000hp combined, as well as rear-wheel steering and a clever torque vectoring system to make it feel as agile as possible.

And the driving experience is being benchmarked against Jags of old. Test drivers have been comparing it side-by-side with iconic models like the XK120, E-Type and the XJ to make sure this new EV is as comfortable and fun to drive as a Jaguar should be.

Why was the Jaguar Type 00 so controversial?

The Jaguar Type 00 represents a huge change for the brand, and it’s not one that its diehard fans took too well. It all started with a wild rebrand at the end of 2024, which brought a new logo and an exuberant advertising campaign which many people said alienated its core customer base.

Jaguar has also stopped building petrol-powered sports cars, saloons and SUVs as it moves towards a fully electric future. The Type 00 concept was a first look at Jaguar’s new design language, and it was once again a huge departure from Jags of old.

In the months that followed you may have seen reports of plummeting sales for the brand, and a lot of the naysayers were quick to blame the rebrand for this decline. The thing is, the cause of this drop in sales is not down to the change in direction, the reason is actually much simpler.

Jaguar has actually stopped building cars while it gears up for its electric future, and it can’t sell cars if it doesn’t make them. There are plenty of used Jaguars from 2024 with low mileage available through Carwow, and this is the closest you’re going to get to a new one for a while.
