Is the Kia EV4 a good car?
Kia is on a roll with its electric cars, and the EV4 hatchback is looking to keep up the winning streak that the EV3, EV6 and EV9 have all been a part of. It’s a little bigger than the Cupra Born and MG 4, offers seriously impressive electric range and it looks great - if a bit too futuristic for some tastes.
Think of the EV4 as a smart watch. It’s packed with tech and clever design, but ultimately it’s a sensible - and useful - item to live with on the day-to-day.
And just like some of the smart watches on sale at the moment, the Kia EV4 is an attention grabbing, sci-fi-esque piece of styling. We’ve got used to Kia’s outrageous looks in the years since the EV6 was launched, but the EV4 adds an extra layer of Star Wars-iness; extra-tall headlights, window trims that carry on over the roof and a wide, squared-off light bar at the back.
Kia EV4: electric range, battery and charging data

Charge time DC: 29 - 31mins, 10-80%, 350kWh
Charge port location: Right side front
Power outputs: 201hp
There’s also a Kia EV4 ‘fastback’ saloon coming later in the year, but we’ll have a look at that separately when more details are available.
The interior feels fresh and original. The dashboard wraps around onto the door cars and features a floating lower section in contrasting fabric, and you can choose from some rather funky, light-hued colour combinations for the interior surfaces.
There are physical climate control buttons on a central panel, and Kia’s slick, responsive three-in-one driver display, touchscreen infotainment and a touch-sensitive climate control panel sandwiched in between them. You get two lots of centre console storage cubbies and long door bins, as well as a 435-litre boot capacity, which is comfortably more than the Volkswagen ID3 but smaller than the Renault Megane E-Tech.
With good looks and great range, the Kia EV4 could be a star player in the family hatchback game once it hits the roads here
Most impressive is the EV4’s claimed range. All EV4s come with the same 201hp electric motor driving the front wheels, and entry level Air cars can be had with a 58.3kWh battery that offers up to 273 miles of range. Models equipped with the 81.4kWh battery offer up to a very commendable 388 miles of range - the most of any Kia EV yet.
Charging from 10-80% takes between about 30 minutes at a 350kW fast charger, depending on battery size, while home charging from an 11kW plug will take the small battery version from 10-80% in 5h 20mins, and the long-range model in 7h 15mins.
We’ll update this review with our driving impressions once we get behind the wheel of the EV4, but if its Kia counterparts are anything to go by, we’re expecting good things. There are used Kias for sale through our network of trusted dealers, and you can even sell your car through Carwow when it’s time to make the switch.
How much is the Kia EV4?
The entry-level, small-battery EV4 Air starts at just over £35,000, jumping up by a few thousand pounds for the long-range model. Air cars come equipped with 17-inch alloy wheels, the triple-display widescreen, heated front seats and steering wheel and LED lights all round.
GT-Line and GT-Line S models can only be had with the bigger battery, and the GT-Line comes with a sporty body kit, gloss black styling, two-tone leatherette interior and pop-out door handles, as well as swanky 19-inch alloys. GT-Line S trim builds on that with ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a Harman Kardon sound system, sunroof, power boot lid and 360-degree parking cameras.
The EV4’s starting price is almost identical to the Cupra Born, but it’s around £5,000 more than the Volkswagen ID3 and a whopping £8,000 more than an MG 4.
