Find out more about the Lexus ES Electric
Is the Lexus ES a good car?
The new ES is Lexus’s dive into the premium electric saloon market, with classy styling, lots of standard equipment and a posh-looking cabin. It can’t travel as far on a charge as some of its alternatives, though.
You can think of it as a Japanese denim jacket, then, in a world of branded designer fare. It doesn’t shout about its fanciness with a loud design, but when it comes to substance, there’s a lot more of it there.
Compared to cars such as the BMW i5, Mercedes EQE and Audi A6 e-tron, the Lexus is positively understated to look at. The Beemer and the Audi have enormous front grilles, while the Mercedes is too try-hard futuristic; looking like a slippery half-used bar of soap. Crisp lines, intricate wheels and a sleek silhouette with a kinked-up little boot lip all work to the ES’s favour here.
The new Lexus ES EV looks more like an executive limo than a typical family saloon
The interior is just as easy on the eye, with a generally minimalist layout broken up by funky illuminated door trims, an all-new 12.3-inch hexagonal instrument display and a whopping great 14.0-inch driver display above a touch-sensitive climate control panel and volume rocker.
After a prod around a pre-production example of the ES, material quality feels high with plush leather and the classic ‘solid’ Lexus impression that everything is well screwed together. There’s plenty of room both front and rear to get comfortable, and lots of storage compartments for odds and ends - though the glovebox is a bit small. A 517-litre boot puts it ahead of the i5 (490 litres) and A6 e-tron (502 litres).
A sole 77kWh battery option provides up to 361 miles of range, a touch behind the BMW and Audi, as well as the Mercedes EQE. With 150kW charging capability the ES can go from 10-80% in 28 minutes.

How much is the Lexus ES?
The ES 350e (the only model we’re getting for now) starts at just over £59,000 in Premium trim, with heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, heated windscreen, metallic paint, a panoramic glass roof and 19-inch wheels as standard.
Premium Plus trim adds a Mark Levinson sound system, head-up display, leather upholstery and bamboo door trims. Top-spec Takumi cars feature 21-inch wheels, a singular reclining back seat (behind the front passenger), heated and ventilated back seats, privacy rear glass and a flip-down control panel in the centre rear armrest. It may as well be called the ‘chauffeur special.’
