Volkswagen has given its two electric SUVs some mechanical upgrades to help boost their appeal over cars like the Skoda Enyaq and Kia EV6.
The ID4 and ID5 have some more powerful and efficient motor options, better range and upgraded infotainment software. Both are available to order now with deliveries starting in early 2024.
New Volkswagen ID4 and ID5 price and specs
Both the Volkswagen ID4 and swoopy ID5 are available to order now. If you go for the ID4, you’ll part with £46,035, while you pay almost a £5,000 premium for its coupe equivalent.
That makes this new ID4 around £3,000 more expensive than the outgoing one, while the ID5 has seen a more modest price hike of a couple of hundred pounds. These cars are available to order now, with first deliveries expected in early 2024.
New Volkswagen ID4 and ID5 motors and performance
The main changes coming for the Volkswagen ID4 and ID5 come under the skin, where you’ll find a couple of new motor options. The first is a rear-wheel drive setup from the all-new Volkswagen ID7.

This puts out 286hp, up from 204hp in the outgoing car, and it makes 545Nm of torque. That’s a whopping 75% more than the 310Nm you get in the current car.
The sporty GTX models have also been given a pretty healthy performance boost, with the dual-motors now producing 340hp rather than the 299hp you get currently. As a result, 0-60mph is now dealt with in 5.4 seconds. That’s almost a full second faster than the outgoing car, and it’s 0.4 of a second quicker than the dual-motor Ford Mustang Mach-E.
New Volkswagen ID4 and ID5 batteries and range
Both the new Volkswagen ID4 and ID5 still use the same batteries as before, meaning you have a 77kWh pack under the floor. More efficient motors do mean you get more range though.

Go for the larger battery in the rear-wheel drive ID4 and you’ll get up to 337 miles of range, an improvement of 10 miles over the current car but still around 11 miles less than you get from an equivalent Skoda Enyaq.
If the coupe shape of the ID5 takes your fancy, you’ll be getting more than just some additional style. The swoopy bodywork also gets you an additional couple of miles of range thanks to the more aerodynamic shape, getting 339 miles in total.
New Volkswagen ID4 and ID5 infotainment
The last notable upgrade for the new Volkswagen ID4 and ID5 comes inside with a new infotainment system. Both cars now get a 12.9-inch screen, up from 12.0-inches in the current car, and it’s been given some software updates to make it easier to use.
The car now has upgraded voice commands which should more easily recognise your commands, as well as some new graphics and menu layouts. An optional premium Harman Kardon sound system is also available.
