Chery, parent company to Omoda and Jaecoo, is launching as a standalone brand in the UK with the Tiggo 8 – a hybrid seven-seat SUV.

  • New Chery Tiggo 8 coming to the UK
  • Omoda and Jaecoo’s parent brand goes solo
  • Seven-seat SUV with a plug-in hybrid engine
  • 56 miles of electric range
  • On sale in a few weeks

This is the new Chery Tiggo 8, a seven-seat hybrid SUV from China which is here to take on cars like the Skoda Kodiaq and Peugeot 3008. Never heard of Chery? You’re not alone, but the brand has sort of been selling cars in the UK for around a year now.

It owns Omoda and Jaecoo, and the Omoda 5 SUV is actually badged as a Chery in other markets. The Tiggo 8 is one of two new SUVs coming from Chery over the coming weeks, and it comes loaded with all the latest tech.

New Chery Tiggo 8 design

It takes a lot to stand out in the crowded SUV market, but the Chery Tiggo 8 looks a little bit generic compared to something like a Peugeot 5008. It’s still a handsome-looking thing, just not what you’d call exciting.

You get a massive, slightly Audi-esque grille up front along with LED headlights, and this car is sitting on 19-inch alloy wheels. At to the rear you have the obligatory full-width light bar along with a silver diffuser on the lower bumper and twin exhausts.

New Chery Tiggo 8 interior and technology

Moving inside the Tiggo 8 you may notice some parts shared with Omoda and Jaecoo models, such as bits of the switchgear and the steering wheel.

It’s a pretty clean-looking dashboard, with a large landscape touchscreen sitting proud in the centre. If the Jaecoo 7 is anything to go by, material quality should also be very good – and the Tiggo 8 comes loaded with tech.

You get a 12-speaker Sony sound system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a panoramic sunroof and adaptive cruise control.

New Chery Tiggo 8 engine

The Tiggo 8 comes with a plug-in hybrid engine which can do up to 56 miles on electric power alone. That’s around 20 miles less than a Skoda Kodiaq can manage, but it’s over 20 miles more than the Hyundai Santa Fe’s claimed range.

It uses a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with two electric motors, and the combined output is 204hp.

New Chery Tiggo 8 prices

The new Chery Tiggo 8 will go on sale in the coming weeks, with customer deliveries starting in late summer. UK prices will be announced soon, and we expect it to cost around £40,000 to put it in line with cars like the Skoda Kodiaq – maybe slightly under to avoid the luxury car tax increase.
