Is a second hand Nissan Qashqai e-POWER a good car?

As a used car, the Qashqai e-Power has a lot going for it. It’s a practical family SUV, and decent value as a second-hand buy.

The e-Power hybrid system is intriguing. Instead of powering the driven wheels with the petrol engine, or the electric motor, or a combination of both, the Qashqai e-Power uses the engine as a generator. It tops up the battery, which supplies energy to the motor, which turns the wheels.

Drive gently and you can hardly hear the petrol engine. Get a move on and the engine is noisier as it works hard to keep the battery charged up. The trouble is, real-world fuel economy of 40-60mpg is nothing out of the ordinary, so what exactly does e-Power achieve that a more conventional hybrid doesn’t?

The e-Power system isn’t efficient enough to be a strong selling point, but equally it’s not a reason to avoid the car either.

Inside, the Qashqai is well made and comfortable to travel in. There’s plenty of space in the front and the back, but you may find the design conservative compared with the likes of the Peugeot 3008.

Boot space could be better, though, especially on the most highly specified trim levels. The Tekna+ has a 455-litre capacity compared with 504 litres for the entry-level model.

Equally, if you are looking for excitement the Qashqai may not be for you. Even with 190hp the car’s hefty weight blunts performance, and the suspension has been tuned for comfort rather than a sporty drive.

If plentiful passenger space and reliability are more important than driver appeal, then a used Qashqai e-Power could be just what you are looking for.

What to look for when buying a used Nissan Qashqai e-POWER

You don’t need to dig deep to buy a high-spec car for a healthy roster of safety kit. Even entry-level cars come with useful driver aids including autonomous emergency braking (AEB).

If you cover a lot of miles on the motorway you may want the Tekna or Tekna+, which come with the ProPilot system that will steer the car and adjust its speed on dual carriageways. You could say it drives the car for you, but the driver should always keep their hands on the wheel and be ready to take over at any moment.

Many used Qashqais will have been used as family cars, so check the interior carefully for any damage caused by boisterous kids.

Reliability is generally sound. The clever and complex e-Power hybrid system rarely goes wrong – glitches with the electrics and touchscreen are more likely.

Be aware that the Qashqai’s new-car warranty runs out after three years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes sooner.

Nissan Qashqai e-POWER FAQs

Nissan’s e-Power system is different from a conventional hybrid. In most petrol-electric cars, the engine and motor both power the driven wheels. In the Qashqai e-Power, the electric motor does that job on its own. The petrol engine acts as a generator for the battery, which is why you fill up rather than plug in.
