Best used hybrid cars

Self-charging hybrid cars can help lower your running costs without needing to be charged up from a plug. Used self-charging hybrids can save you even more, knowing which ones are best can be a chore, so we’ve done the work for you.

Ford Kuga

1. Ford Kuga

6/10
Ford Kuga review
Battery range up to 35 miles
The Kuga SUV offers a sharp driving experience and comes packed with kit despite a reasonable asking price. Used models can offer a big saving over a new car. The 190hp hybrid motor can average 51mpg and has decent performance. The only drawback here is a slightly below average boot and an infotainment system that isn’t quite as intuitive as it should be.
Honda Jazz

2. Honda Jazz

7/10
Honda Jazz review
The Honda Jazz is a versatile city car with plenty of interior space. It also manages a seriously impressive 63mpg thanks to its frugal self-charging hybrid engine. It is priced at the top end of the small car market, but you can find plenty of nearly new low mileage cars for a significant saving.
Kia Niro

3. Kia Niro

7/10
Kia Niro review
Battery range up to 40 miles
The latest Kia Niro (pictured) is an impressive family SUV, but there was nothing much wrong with the previous generation model either. It could be had with a frugal self-charging hybrid engine which can be driven for short periods purely on battery power. Used examples are very keenly priced, too.
Lexus NX Hybrid

4. Lexus NX

7/10
Lexus NX Hybrid review
If you’re after a luxurious SUV for a decent price that also offers low running costs, then the previous generation Lexus NX350h is a great choice. It’s packed with equipment, but doesn’t quite have the interior space and slick infotainment system of some of its contemporaries.
Toyota Corolla

5. Toyota Corolla

8/10
Toyota Corolla review
The Toyota Corolla is a great hybrid car that is well-built and cheap to run. It’s not the most spacious in the rear but should be more than adequate for a family of four with a pair of teenagers. Low mileage examples of the current generation model can be had for a significant saving over a new car.
Renault Clio

6. Renault Clio

9/10
Renault Clio review
The Renault Clio is a popular and capable small hatchback, that’s made even more desirable thanks to its sprightly hybrid engine. You can find great savings on the current generation model which offers an upmarket interior and a surprisingly spacious boot.
Toyota Yaris Hybrid

7. Toyota Yaris

8/10
Toyota Yaris Hybrid review
If you spend much of your time within city limits, the compact Toyota Yaris hybrid is a great option. It won’t win any prizes for rear passenger and boot space, but it’s thoroughly modern inside and will deliver up to 69mpg. Used examples will further lower your monthly payments.
Honda CR-V

8. Honda CR-V

6/10
Honda CR-V review
The Honda CR-V is spacious and comfortable around town and has decent boot space. The engine can get vocal when pushed, but it offers a respectable 43mpg in mixed driving. Used models offer a big saving that should help keep running costs low.
Hyundai Ioniq hybrid

9. Hyundai Ioniq

6/10
Hyundai Ioniq hybrid review
There’s a lot to like about the sharp-looking Hyundai Ioniq. It promises very low running costs and more standard equipment than most alternatives. It’s not the quickest car around, but it is easy to drive and used examples offer seriously good value for money.
Suzuki Swace

10. Suzuki Swace

8/10
Suzuki Swace review
The Suzuki Swace is essentially a Toyota Corolla Touring with a different badge, but that’s no bad thing. It’s solidly built and offers a smooth and comfortable driving experience. New ones are priced below an equivalent Corolla Touring, and used models are even more affordable.

Advice about used hybrid cars

Used hybrid cars FAQs

As a superb all-rounder the BMW 330e is hard to beat. It’s great to drive and will deliver up to 34 miles on battery power which can equate to a big saving on the daily commute. New models come with hefty price tags, but you can find some great deals on one and two year old models.

The answer to this depends on what your specific needs are. A Toyota Yaris is hard to beat as a frugal city car, while the Ford Kuga SUV hybrid is both efficient and very capable on the open road.

The Hyundai Ioniq makes a strong case for itself as one of the best value used hybrids a round. Now that it is no longer in production, you can find great deals on 2018 to 2022 models. All trims come with a decent level of standard equipment and they’re easy to drive.

As with any used car, make sure that it comes with a verifiable service history. A hybrid delivers its best fuel economy around town so it might not be the best choice for you if you spend a lot of time on the motorway.

A self-charging hybrid doesn’t need to be plugged in as the battery pack is charged while you are driving. The downside is that you get little to no range on purely electric power. If you have access to a charging point then a plug-in hybrid may be a good alternative.

Most modern hybrids are well-built and offer good fuel economy in the right driving conditions. However, even the best hybrid car can quickly become a headache if it is unreliable or expensive to maintain.  So make sure to check the service and recall history of the hybrid car you are looking to purchase beforehand.
