Jaguar has finally announced the name for its new electric luxury saloon. Say hello to the Type 01, which will be revealed in September with three electric motors and more than 1,000hp.

There are few car makers which have caused quite such a stir over the past few years than Jaguar. After a controversial rebrand and almost two years of not building or selling any cars, it’s finally – almost – ready to reveal the model which will relaunch the brand.

And that model now has a name. It’s called the Jaguar Type 01, and it’s a large electric luxury saloon which will take on cars like the Rolls Royce Ghost and the Bentley Flying Spur. Here’s everything we know about the Jaguar Type 01 so far.

New Jaguar Type 01: the story so far

Back in late 2024, Jaguar made the interesting business decision to stop making any cars. As a car maker, this seemed like a strange move.

But it was a calculated one, because Jaguar wanted to reinvent itself as a maker of super high-end electric cars. It therefore took a two-year break to develop an all-new collection of EV parts, and it also launched a wild-looking concept car called the Type 00.

It looked like the sort of car Cruella DeVille would drive if 101 Dalmatians was set 1,000 years in the future, and Jaguar promised that the production car would look almost identical, albeit with a couple of extra doors.

Fast forward to today, and the four-door GT car finally has a name. It’ll be called the Type 01, with 0 standing for zero emissions and 1 signifying the first of a new generation of Jaguars.

New Jaguar Type 01 design: will it look like the concept car?

We’ve only got camouflaged spy shots to go on so far, but initial signs are promising. You can clearly see that the Type 01 has a similar long bonnet to the Type 00, which would be excessive on a car with a massive V12 engine under there and is downright bonkers on an EV.

It also appears to have a similar bluff front end to the concept car, with no grilles or fake vents in sight. The Type 00 looked very imposing from the front, and we don’t expect the Type 01 to be any different.

The Type 01 seems to have a more traditional saloon silhouette than the swoopy Type 00 concept, but you can still see the horizontal slatted taillights poking through the wrap. It looks as though the production car will have no rear window as well, just like the Polestar 4.

New Jaguar Type 01 motors and performance

The main reason Jaguar took such a long break from making cars was so it could work on the electric underpinnings for the Type 01. It uses an all-new collection of parts, referred to collectively as the Jaguar Electric Architecture (JEA), and it shares nothing in common with the upcoming Range Rover EV despite both brands being owned by the same parent company.

The Type 01 will have three electric motors which produce over 1,000hp combined, and it also has rear-wheel steering and a clever torque vectoring system to make sure it’s as fun to drive as a Jaguar should be.

It’s actually being benchmarked against Jags of old, with engineers comparing it side-by-side with cars such as the XK120, E-Type and the old XJ.

When can I buy the new Jaguar Type 01?

The Jaguar Type 01 is due to be revealed in September this year, almost two years after the Type 00 concept was first unveiled. We expect sales to start in mid-2027, with prices starting well north of £100,000.
