Tesla makes some of the best electric cars on the market, and until the end of March it’s also offering £3,750 off a new Model 3 or Model Y when you trade in your old car.

When you think of electric cars, one of the first brands which springs to mind is probably Tesla. There’s a good reason for this; Tesla has only ever sold EVs, and they’re some of the best on the market.

Whether you go for the Model 3 saloon or the spacious Model Y SUV, you’re getting a car which is great to drive, packed with tech and affordable to buy. Let’s take a deeper look at why you might want to consider a new Tesla.

Are Teslas good cars?

In a word, yes. If you’re in the market for a new EV, a Tesla should be near the top of your shortlist.

The range kicks off with the Model 3 saloon. It may not look as exciting as a Hyunjdai Ioniq 6, but it’s fantastic to drive thanks to the sharp steering and comfy suspension. You can also choose between a variety of versions to suit your needs, whether that’s the affordable Standard model, the Long Range which does a whopping 466 miles on a charge or the BMW M3-scaring Performance.

It’s a similar story with the Model Y. This is the car to go for if you want maximum interior space, because it has palatial rear seats and a massive 854-litre boot. That’s the biggest in this class by quite some way.

It can’t go quite as far on a charge as the Model 3 thanks to the taller body, but 391 miles of range is still impressive. You can also get a Performance version which offers similar thrills to the quickest Model 3.

Why now might be the right time to buy a Tesla

Teslas are also known for offering great value for money. As an example, the Model 3 starts from £37,990, making it over £13,000 cheaper than a BMW i4 while offering similar levels of kit and performance.

And Tesla is also running a trade-in offer on all cars ordered before 31 March. On top of the value of your old car, you can also get an additional £3,750 discount towards the cost of your new EV*. This deal is only available on cars which are currently new in stock, not on approved used models.

So let’s say your car is worth £5,000. Once you apply this trade-in offer, you’ll actually get £8,750 towards the cost of your new Tesla. That’s a proper bargain for a car which comes with adaptive cruise control, heated seats and a surround-view camera as standard.

This offer also applies to the Model Y, which gets a similar amount of standard equipment and starts from just over £38,000 after the discount.

What should I consider before buying a Tesla?

Teslas may be great electric cars, but they won’t be for everyone. Here are a few things to consider before buying.

First off is the interior. Everything is controlled through the central touchscreen and, while it’s one of the easier systems to use on the market, it’s still a bit fiddly on the move. A Skoda Elroq may be a better option if you prefer physical buttons.

Both the Model 3 and Model Y lag behind German alternatives in terms of interior quality as well. They feel posh enough for the price, but a BMW i4 or Audi Q4 e-tron both feel more premium inside.

Finally, if you’re after the most comfortable electric car then you might want to look elsewhere. The Model 3 and Model Y are decent over bumps, but both can feel a bit firm if the road gets really rough. A Mercedes CLA Electric copes better over potholes.
