Mat Watson reckons the Volvo EC40 is a great electric SUV, and he’s found a deal on a used example from 2026 which could save you a shed-load of cash.
This is the Volvo EC40, and it’s basically a sporty-looking version of the EX40 electric SUV with a sloping roofline. I really like it, but if you want to get the best deal on one then I’d suggest taking a look at used examples.

Volvo EC40 prices and deals: how to get the best value for money
While looking at used cars on Carwow, I found this 2026 Volvo EC40 Black Edition. It’s got just over 7,000 miles on the clock, and it can be yours for £38,990.
It’s the Extended Range version, meaning you can do up to 354 miles on a charge, and it’s also in Ultra Spec. This is the top-of-the-range EC40, with a Harman Kardon sound system, heated seats, a heated steering wheel, surround-view cameras and adaptive cruise control.
I specced up this exact car on Volvo’s configurator, and it came to £50,600. So by forgoing the new car smell, you’re saving £11,610.
Why should you consider the Volvo EC40?
There are a few good reasons I think you should add the Volvo EC40 to your shortlist. Here are three examples.
1. The styling is fantastic
I always thought the Volvo EX40 was a good-looking thing, but the EC40 is even cooler still. The sloping roofline gives it a more sporty vibe, and I really like the slim taillights and subtle spoilers.
2. The interior is lovely
This interior design has been around for a while, but it still looks really posh. The optional crystal gear selector is a nice touch, and I like the wood trim you can get on the dash. I have to mention the seats as well, because they are fantastically comfortable.
3. It’s nice to drive
As a relaxing daily cruiser, the Volvo EC40 is great. It’s really quiet on the motorway, the suspension soaks up the bumps nicely and it feels pretty quick in rear-wheel drive form. Go for the 408hp Twin Motor and it’s ballistically fast.
Three annoying things about the Volvo EC40
As much as I like this car, it won’t suit everyone. Here are three annoying things to consider before buying one.
1. Terrible rear visibility
That sloping roofline does come with a drawback – the view out the back is rubbish. You really need that 360-degree camera when parking, and pulling out at oblique junctions is a bit of a lottery at times.
2. It’s not as fun to drive as the looks would suggest
It may be a comfortable car, but the Volvo EC40 won’t put a grin on your face on a twisty road. It handles well enough, with precise steering and well-judged controls, but a BMW iX1 feels more agile.
3. The boot is pretty small
The EC40 has a 413-litre boot, which is 116 litres smaller than an Audi Q4 e-tron and a whopping 151 litres less than a Skoda Enyaq Coupe. It’s an alright size for the weekly shop, but there are certainly more practical EVs out there.
