Citroen e-C5 Aircross Review & Prices

The Citroen e-C5 Aircross is the all-new version of one of our favourite family cars – it looks fantastic, but the rear seats might not be quite as useful as in the old C5 Aircross.

Is the Citroen e-C5 Aircross a good car?

The Citroen e-C5 Aircoss is an all-new electric SUV with sharp styling and the potential to go a long way between charges. The old petrol- and hybrid-powered model was a bargain, and one of our favourite family cars, but this new one has an all-new look and all-electric power, so can it live up to the high standards set by its predecessor?

It’s a bit like one of your friends who has gone on holiday to Turkey and come back looking like a new person. The second generation of Citroen’s popular family SUV now has a sharper look, completely overhauling the chic yet understated looks of the old one.

The styling makeover for the e-C5 Aircross is pretty substantial, and reflects the fact that this latest model has had a mechanical overhaul, sharing parts with the Peugeot E-3008 and E-5008, as well as the Vauxhall Grandland Electric.

Given that all of those cars are basically the same under the skin, Citroen’s designers have worked hard to make sure that the e-C5 Aircross looks distinctive on top, and for the most part they’ve succeeded, with a high-tech, ultra-modern appearance.

Citroen e-C5 Aircross: electric range, battery and charging data

Range: 323-423 miles
Efficiency: 4.4 miles per kWh
Battery size: 73kWh / 97kWh
Max charge speed: 160kW
Charge time AC: 6hrs 45mins, 20-80% @ 7kW / 9hrs, 20-80% @ 7kW
Charge port location: Left rear
Power output: 211hp / 228hp

The new e-C5 Aircross is longer than the old model, and that shows in the cabin. Previously, while the C5 Aircross was roomy enough, it could feel a touch cramped in the back seats at times. No danger of that anymore, as this latest e-C5 Aircross gets a super-roomy cabin, and the longer wheelbase means that even tall passengers can get comfy in the back seats, which recline for maximum comfort on a long run.

Speaking of which, Citroen is once again using its ‘Advanced Comfort’ seat designs for the e-C5 Aircross, so the front and rear seats are comfy like your favourite sofa. It’s just a shame that Citroen has thrown out the three individual seats in the back, which meant you could have three ISOFIX seats mounted in the old model.

The boot, at 651 litres, is smaller than that of the old C5 Aircross, although that was only with the back seats slid all the way forwards, which wasn’t great for rear seat comfort. This generation of e-C5 Aircross gets the same boot space whichever version you go for – whether that’s the hybrid C5 Aircross or this fully electric model – although disappointingly there’s no ‘front boot’ in the nose of this EV.

Up front, the e-C5 Aircross gets a very distinctive look. The driver’s instrument screen is slightly buried under the edge of the dashboard, which is quite like the layout you get in the Vauxhall Grandland, but the infotainment screen in the centre looks wildly different.

The Citroen C5 Aircross has long been one of the best family cars, and this electric version appears to continue the practical yet affordable recipe

It’s a portrait-style screen, which curves up and out of the centre console, leaving loads of space, handy for storage, behind and below it. The cupholders are fitted down below the screen, which could be annoying when you’re driving, though.

Citroen’s using lots of soft, plush fabrics for the cabin, which is likely to give the e-C5 Aircross a slightly more luxurious feel than the old model could manage.

This electric version gets a choice of batteries — a 73kWh pack with a 211hp front-wheel drive electric motor that’s good for up to 323 miles of range, or a much bigger 98kWh battery, which comes with a 228hp motor and a whopping 423 miles of range.

In typical Citroen fashion, the e-C5 Aircross looks like fantastic value. Prices start at around £34,000, which is almost £3,000 less than the Vauxhall Grandland. Even top-spec models fall below £40,000, which means that, before options, no versions will face the expensive car supplement for road tax.

That also makes the e-C5 Aircross significantly cheaper than a Tesla Model Y, with similar space inside and range, and quite a bit cheaper than the Volkswagen ID4.

Citroen e-C5 Aircross FAQs

It depends on the model. The entry-level e-C5 Aircross uses a 73kWh battery with a claimed official range of 323 miles, while the version with the larger 97kWh battery has a claimed official range of up to 423 miles.

This is a brand new model — from the wheels up — so we simply don’t know yet, but the old C5 Aircross was a solid car, finishing in 8th place in the most recent Driver Power Top 50 Cars To Own list.

Not at all. The first generation model (heavily facelifted and updated in 2022) has been in production since 2017, and now it’s being replaced by this all-new version, which comes in hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and all-electric forms.
