Is the DS No7 a good car?

It may have a new name, but the DS No7 is a direct successor to the DS7 SUV, the brand’s most popular model since it was introduced in 2017. The second-generation car has a sharp new look to go with its new name and stylish interior, but the sole self-charging hybrid engine option is lacklustre compared to more powerful alternatives.

Those more powerful cars include the mechanically-similar Peugeot 3008, the Volkswagen Tiguan, Renault Rafale and Cupra Formentor, all of which can be had as plug-in hybrids. The Peugeot is just as sharp, but the DS has the edge when it comes to styling, a bit like a Dior purse compared to a Zara item.

In fact, you might just forgive it for being down on power, because the No7 is a brilliant-looking thing. There’s a clear resemblance to the smaller DS No8, but the SUV wears its sharp corners, dramatic lighting and two-tone paint schemes even better than its saloon counterpart.

The interior is also very much a No8 lookalike, but that’s no bad thing. A wraparound dashboard meets a pair of funky speakers featuring an intricate ‘grille’ pattern, projecting light onto the quilted door cards. There are more light patterns on the dash and centre console, while the large 16-inch infotainment screen dominates the cabin.

At a glance, there’s a wireless phone charger on the centre console beneath the dashboard, above a storage shelf with a palmrest set behind the gear selector switch. There’s a lack of cupholders on display, though we’ll confirm once we get the chance to poke-and-prod around the No7’s interior.

I hope the DS is as good to drive as it looks, and if it’s similar to the C5 Aircross, it ought to be

A 560-litre boot with an adjustable-height floor and under-floor storage puts the No7 narrowly behind the 3008 (588 litres) and a long distance behind the Volkswagen Tiguan with a mighty 652 litres of cargo space.

If you opt for the hybrid No7 over the electric No7 E-Tense, you have a single, 145hp self-charging unit available. In the mechanically-related Peugeot 3008 and 5008 the engine is fine, if nothing more. It’s a fuel efficient motor, but when fully laden in the Peugeots it sounds quite gruff and feels strained when you put your foot down.

Nonetheless, DS quotes a 52mpg figure - which ought to be easy to achieve - and a CO2 output of around 124g/km. The ability to drive at low speeds on electric-only power is a plus, and if it’s anything like the aforementioned Peugeots and the similar Citroen C5 Aircross, we’re expecting the DS No7 to be a very comfortable car to drive.

How much is the DS No7?

DS hasn’t announced official UK pricing yet, but considering the DS No8 costs around £1,000 less in Britain than it does in France (go figure?), you can tentatively expect the No7 range will kick off at around £37,000 in Pallas trim. This could rise as high as £51,000 for the limited-run ‘La Premiere’ trim, celebrating the car’s launch.

Pallas cars come as standard with a phone charging pad, keyless entry-and-go, front and rear parking sensors with a reversing camera, touchless electric tailgate, heated front seats and sound-insulating glass.

Etoile models add larger 19- or 20-inch wheels, an illuminated front grille, 360-degree cameras, automatically-dimming rear-view mirror, comfort seats with neck warmers and an on-board air purifier.

La Premiere is the range-topper, with 21-inch wheels, Focal sound system, ‘lounge’ seats with a nappa leather bracelet for you (or whoever you choose to re-gift it to), heated steering wheel and windscreen, plus a bespoke bonnet badge.
