It claimed the title of Outstanding EV in the 2025 Carwow Car Of The Year Awards for its huge, luxurious interior and comfy driving experience, and it’s a bit of a bargain on the second hand market.

Let’s say you’re after a big, posh electric SUV with seating for seven. You could have a Volvo EX90 for around £83,000, or maybe a Mercedes EQS SUV for £130,000. Both are certainly luxurious, but there’s another option which costs far less.

I’m talking about the Kia EV9. If you rewind 10 years or so, the idea that budget brand Kia would be making a car which could take on Mercedes would be laughable, but this electric car really is that good. Plus, with prices starting from £65,000 it’s a lot cheaper than most alternatives.

And you can get one for even less by checking out the used examples available through Carwow. I managed to find a few EV9s from 2024 with less than 2,000 miles on the clock for under £50,000 – that’s £15,000 less than it cost new.

This is for the entry-level Air trim, which in many ways is the one to go for. You get a 200hp motor driving the rear wheels and a claimed range of 349 miles – pretty good for something as enormous as the EV9.

You also get adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree camera system, two 12.3-inch screens, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a heated steering wheel and heated and ventilated seats.

Kia EV9 dimensions

  • Length: 5,015mm
  • Width: 1,980mm
  • Height: 1,780mm
  • Boot (seven seats): 333 litres
  • Boot (five seats): 828 litres
  • Boot (seats folded): 2,393 litres
  • Front boot: 180 litres

Why should you choose the Kia EV9?

When I first reviewed the Kia EV9 back in 2024, the first thing that struck me was just how practical this SUV is. The rear legroom is palatial, and there’s even plenty of space for adults in the third row. You also get plenty of clever storage solutions, and the boot is more than big enough for any family’s needs.

The interior isn’t just practical though, it’s really nicely built. The materials all feel solid and high quality, and the tech offered in the EV9 is also really impressive. You get twin 12.3-inch screens as standard which are easy to use, although they are a bit far away while you’re driving.

Speaking of driving, the EV9 is a really comfy cruiser thanks to the subtle suspension, and it remains quiet in the cabin at motorway speeds. It’s also surprisingly easy to drive around
town considering its size, mostly thanks to the light steering and great visibility.

One thing that does annoy me is the safety systems. It’s great that the EV9 gets a lot of safety tech as standard, but the constant bonging can get annoying after a while and you have to dig through menus to turn it off every time you get in the car.

Small gripes aside though, the Kia EV9 truly is a match for the more expensive German alternatives in this class. It feels posh, offers huge amounts of interior space and is great to drive.

Kia EV9 alternatives

Not sold on the Kia EV9? Here are three other electric SUVs you could consider instead.

Volvo EX90: Stylish and safe, but it’s quite expensive and the suspension is fidgety over bumps.

Hyundai Santa Fe: The best hybrid seven-seater around, but there’s no electric version.

Peugeot E-5008: Not quite as spacious as the EV9, but equally stylish and with a lovely interior.
