If you fancy the sophisticated looks of the Volvo V90 estate but live in rural parts of the country, the new V90 Cross Country might be perfect for you. Not as tall as a full-blown SUV nor as low-slung as the regular V90 estate, the Cross Country is ideal for those needing all-weather ability without the chunky SUV image.

The most obvious change compared to the regular V90 estate is the raised ride height intended to help the Cross Country avoid beaching itself on rough terrain. In addition, you get chunky plastic bumpers designed to shrug off minor scratches and dings you might get off the beaten track.
Apart from that, very little has changed – you still get the same subtle Swedish styling defined by clean lines and smooth surfaces. The bluff front grille remains and is flanked by LED headlights with ‘Thor’s hammer’ motifs.

Exact specification is yet to be confirmed but it’s unlikely there’ll be any differences in the V90’s cabin – although the Cross Country is likely to be positioned toward the higher end of the V90 lineup with a higher purchase price and more standard kit.
You still get a cabin dominated by minimalist design, tasteful materials, excellent build quality and Volvo’s latest portrait-oriented infotainment screen. In addition, the firm is known for its fantastically supportive seats so expect to be sat in comfort if you find yourself in a V90 Cross Country.
Volvo V90 Cross Country engines and driving
Volvo hasn’t confirmed what engines will be sold with the V90 Cross Country. The current V90 gets the option of the 190hp D4 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel or a more powerful 235hp D5 featuring the firm’s ‘Powerpulse’ technology to reduce turbo lag when accelerating. Both come fitted with an eight-speed automatic gearbox as standard.
It’s likely the V90 Cross Country will get the D5, but it’s not clear whether the lesser D4 will join the range. There’s been no confirmation whether any petrol engines will be offered later on – including the T8 plug-in hybrid with nearly 400hp and supermini-like fuel consumption.
Volvo V90 Cross Country price and release date
The standard V90 costs from £34,555 for a D4 and £41,555 for the D5. Should the firm decide to offer only the D5 unit, a £45,000 entry-level price seems likely. Exact information will be released later in 2016 with deliveries expected in the first quarter of 2017.
