The all-new Audi Q5 Sportback coupe-SUV has been spotted testing before it’s revealed in late 2020. Read on for info on this BMW X4 alternative…

  • Q5 Sportback coming soon
  • Based on the standard Q5
  • Sportier roofline and rear
  • Will come with similar interior
  • Shares Q5’s infotainment tech
  • Engines will be lifted from Q5
  • Due to be revealed before 2021
  • Expected to cost more than Q5

Not content with building a coupe-styled version of the Q3 and Q7, Audi has turned its attention to the Q5 SUV and come up with the Q5 Sportback. It’s a supposedly sportier version of this popular family car that’ll be an alternative to the Mercedes GLC Coupe and BMW X4 when it goes on sale in 2021.

From the front, the new Sportback looks identical to the Audi Q5.

2021 Audi Q5 Sportback design

Audi hasn’t revealed what the new Q5 Sportback will look like, but these photos featuring a prototype being put through its paces show us that it’ll share plenty with the recently updated Q5. You can spot the same angular grille at the front between two slime headlights and a set of large – but likely fake – air intakes on either side.

The Sportback’s sloping roofline and rear windscreen are all new.

You’ll spot what makes this the ‘Sportback’ as soon as you check it out from the side. The new car takes the standard Q5’s boxy back-end and replaces it with a sloping roofline and a more rakish rear window – much like on the Q3 Sportback.

The Audi Q5 Sportback will take inspiration from the Q3 Sportback, shown here.

It’s likely the Q5 Sportback’s side skirts and rear bumper will come with a few extra contrasting trims to help differentiate the new Sportback model from the standard Q5. As with other Audi models, you’ll be able to get it as a more aggressive-looking S-Line model will with different bumpers, and there’ll be the option to ditch the standard silver plastic trim for gloss black instead.

The new Sportback will come with a similar interior to the Q5, shown here.

2021 Audi Q5 Sportback interior and practicality

The new Audi Q5 Sportback will almost certainly come with the same interior upgrades as the recently revamped Q5. The basic dashboard and centre console are expected to be carried over unchanged and you’ll get a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment display on the dashboard. The rotary controller of older Audi models will be replaced by an extra storage tray.

Space in the back won’t be quite as generous as in the standard Q5 – that slinky roof will eat significantly into rear-seat headroom. The boot will be slightly smaller too, but you can expect the Q5 Sportback’s luggage capacity to be on par with the 500-litre boots you get in a BMW X4 and Mercedes GLC Coupe.

The Audi Q5 Sportback will share the standard Q5’s petrol and diesel engines.

2021 Audi Q5 Sportback engines and driving

The new Audi Q5 Sportback will come with the same range of engines as the standard Q5. Entry-level cars will likely get a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol in 45TFSI guise that’ll produce 265hp and should return around 30mph.

The Audi Q5 Sportback will come with four-wheel drive and an automatic gearbox as standard.

There’ll also be a 2.0-litre four-cylinder 40TDI diesel with 204hp that’ll top 50mpg. Both models will get four-wheel drive and a seven-speed automatic gearbox. It’s likely Audi will offer the Q5 Sportback with the same plug-in hybrid system that’s coming to the standard Q5 before 2021, and you can expect a faster SQ5 Sportback model to appear later in 2021, too.

The Audi Q5 Sportback will go on sale in 2021.

2021 Audi Q5 Sportback price and release date

Audi is expected to reveal the new Q5 Sportback sometime in late 2020. It should go on sale in early 2021 and will cost a few thousand pounds more than the standard Q5 across the range. So, you can expect to hand over from around £45,000 for an entry-level car.
