Is the Volkswagen ID7 Tourer a good car?

The Volkswagen ID7 Tourer is an EV estate car, making it a rather rare thing indeed. It promises a similarly spacious cabin and long electric range to the hatchback version, but with a little extra practicality. It’s a bit like buying a stylish jacket then sewing on extra pockets.

Electric estate cars are few and far between, but you could consider the much cheaper Peugeot e-308 SW, or the pricier BMW i5 Touring. For ID7 Tourer money there are also plenty of electric SUVs, such as the Kia EV6.

The ID7 is a huge car, and with its big estate back end it looks even bigger in Tourer form. It’s no old-fashioned brick though – the ID7 has sleek lines which start with the slim headlights up front and continue into the way the roof gently curves down into the bootlid.

There’s loads of space inside, and the estate roof should mean there’s even more headroom than the hatchback for those sitting in the back seats. Importantly, there’s also a bigger boot, with a massive 605 litres available, making it bigger than any alternatives. And on top of pure capacity, the high roof also means carrying large items will be easier than in the hatchback.

The Volkswagen ID7 Tourer is spacious inside, has a massive boot and goes a long way between charges. Still want that SUV?

Tech is suitably impressive too. The Tourer gets a cool augmented reality head-up display, which projects information such as your speed and sat nav directions onto the windscreen. You also get a big touchscreen infotainment screen that’s much more intuitive to use than the clunky systems in older VW ID models.

At launch there’s just the one version of the ID7 Tourer, which has an official range of 374 miles. A bigger battery will join the line-up later, promising a range of up to 425 miles, while the sporty GTX will get more power and the smaller battery. Even in its most basic trim, though, the ID7 Tourer goes considerably further on a charge than alternatives. In fact, it’s among the longest-range EVs on sale

It charges fairly quickly, too – with a maximum charge rate of 175kW, it will go from 10-80% in 28 minutes at a public fast charger. However, the Kia EV6 can do the same in just 18 minutes, because it can charge at up to 350kW.

There’s only one trim at launch, but you get some good equipment, such as a 15.0-inch infotainment display, head-up display and a voice assistant that can consult ChatGPT.
