Drag race: Ferrari SF90 vs 1,000hp estate car

When I was a kid, estate cars were mostly dull family cars driven by photocopier salespeople, but these days you can get some seriously exciting estates which will get any petrolhead’s heart racing.

You have cars like the Audi RS6 Avant, the Mercedes-AMG C63 S Estate and the car I’m driving today – the BMW M3 Touring. And this is no ordinary M3 Touring either, it’s one that’s been tuned to produce an insane amount of power.

Enough power in fact that I’m confident it can scare a supercar in a drag race, which is why I’ll be putting it up against the Ferrari SF90. Let’s take a closer look at the stats.

Tuned BMW M3 Touring

My BMW M3 Touring has a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged straight-six engine which usually produces 510hp and 650Nm of torque, however this car is far from standard. It’s been tuned by G-Tech Motor-Works with a fully built engine and gearbox to produce 1,000hp and 1,100Nm of torque.

It has all-wheel drive and launch control to get me off the line as quickly as possible, and the M3 weighs in at 1,865kg. In total this car costs £150,000 with all the upgrades, which seems like a bargain compared to the Ferrari.

Ferrari SF90

That’s because the SF90 costs a whopping £550,000. For this you get a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine with three electric motors – two driving the front wheels and one in the gearbox. Combined, this system puts out 1,000hp and 800Nm of torque.

Like the BMW, the Ferrari has four-wheel drive. It is lighter though, tipping the scales at 1,770kg.
