Supercar vs hypercar drag race: McLaren 750S takes on the McLaren P1 down the quarter mile
June 07, 2025 by Mat Watson

Anyone who grew up in the early 2010s watching Top Gear will know all about the McLaren P1. It’s one third of the legendary Holy Trinity, the other two being the Ferrari LaFerrari and the Porsche 918 Spyder.
It was renowned at the time for its lairy handling and ballistic performance, but that was 12 years ago now. Technology has come a long way, so can the P1 still hold its own?
To find out, I’m going to drag race it against McLaren’s latest supercar, the 750S. Let’s take a closer look at the stats.
And remember, if you want to save money on your next car you can get great deals through Carwow. Check out the latest savings, lease deals and used cars to find your next set of wheels at the right price.
McLaren P1
Powering the P1 is a 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V8 mated to an electric motor, and combined they make 916hp and 900Nm of torque. This is all sent to the rear wheels only, which explains this car’s reputation for being tail-happy.

It has a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, and the P1 weighs in at just 1,490kg. It’s quite expensive these days though, because the owner of this car just paid £1.2 million for it.
Mclaren 750S
That makes the McLaren 750S look like a bit of a bargain, because it’s almost £1 million cheaper at £277,000. For that you get a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8, but there’s no hybrid system here.

It still puts out 750hp and 800Nm of torque, and this is sent to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. The 750S is slightly lighter than the P1 as well, it tips the scales at 1,440kg.
So which car will come out on top? Well, if the P1 gets a good launch then my money’s on that car, but you’ll have to watch the video to see what happens.
