Can the new Zeekr 8X beat a Ferrari in a drag race? Mat Watson finds out

This is the new Zeekr 8X, and it’s totally bonkers. It’s a massive hybrid SUV from Chinese parent company Geely, which also owns brands like Volvo and Lotus. It’s also hugely powerful.

So powerful in fact that I’m going to drag race it against a Ferrari Purosangue, a BMW X5 M and a Land Rover Defender Octa. Let’s take a look at the stats.

New Zeekr 8X

Under the bonnet, the Zeekr 8X has a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine. That may not sound impressive, but it also has three electric motors which produce a combined 1,381hp and 1,410Nm of torque.

It is rather heavy though, tipping the scales at 2,820kg. That makes it the heaviest car here, but it’s also the cheapest. The Zeekr costs £54,300.

Ferrari Purosangue

The Ferrari costs almost six times as much as the Zeekr, coming in at £313,000. You do get three times as many cylinders though, with the 6.5-litre naturally-aspirated V12 engine putting out 725hp and 750Nm of torque.

This is sent to all four wheels, and the Ferrari weighs 2,033kg.

BMW X5 M

Up next is the BMW X5 M, which has a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine with 625hp and 750Nm of torque. Like the other cars here, it also has four-wheel drive.

The BMW tips the scales at 2,400kg, and it costs £137,330.

Land Rover Defender Octa

Finally, we have the only SUV here with proper off-road ability. That won’t matter here, but what will matter is the fact it uses a similar 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine to the BMW, but it has 635hp and 800Nm of torque.

This is sent to all four wheels, and it weighs 2,510kg, which offsets the power advantage it has against the X5. All-in, this car will cost you £148,000.

So the Zeekr is the most powerful car here by far, and it’s way cheaper than the competition as well. That colossal weight figure will count against it though. Check out this week’s video to see what happens over the quarter-mile.
