This is the new Renault 5, and I think it’s one of the best new electric cars on sale today. Here are five cool things about this funky little EV.

The new Renault 5 is one of the most talked about new cars in recent years, and everyone seems to love it. To find out why, I’ve reviewed this retro-styled electric car, and it certainly lives up to the hype.

It looks fantastic, inside and out, but it’s not a case of style over substance. The Renault 5 is also great to drive, packed with tech and great value for money. It may not be all that spacious in the back, but if this doesn’t bother you then just go right ahead and buy this car.

During my time with the car, I found a few cool features which I really liked beyond the chic styling and lovely interior. Here are five examples.

  1. Pedestrian warning noises
  2. Safety system shortcuts
  3. This car grades your driving
  4. Why the Renault 5 is the ideal camping car
  5. ISOFIX on the front seats

1. Pedestrian warning noises

Every electric car will emit a noise at low speeds to warn pedestrians that you’re coming, but in the Renault 5 you have three sounds to choose from. One of them was composed by French musician Jean-Michel Jarre, who holds the record for the biggest live performance in history after he performed in front of 3.5 million people in Moscow.

2. Safety system shortcuts

Modern cars are packed with safety systems which can be really useful, but sometimes the endless binging and bonging can get on your nerves. Well in the Renault 5, and most other Renault models, there’s a really handy button which you just double tap to turn them all off so you can drive in peace and quiet.

3. This car grades your driving

The Renault 5 will grade your driving out of 100 for both safety and efficiency, and it’ll give you tips on how to improve your skills behind the wheel. I scored 86/100 for safety, and the car suggested I try indicating when switching lanes to bump my score up even more. I must be spending too much time driving BMWs…

4. Why the Renault 5 is the ideal camping car

You can use your Renault 5 as a giant powerbank for appliances like microwaves and kettles. Sadly I didn’t have the right adapter for this, but if I did I could use the little Renault to make a croque monsieur out in the sticks.

5. ISOFIX on the front seats

If you like to keep your baby next to you in the car, the Renault 5 has ISOFIX on the front passenger seat. That means you can get a total of three baby seats in this dinky EV, not that you’d want to on a regular basis with the lack of rear space.
