This is the new Smart #3. It’s the second electric SUV to come from the brand after the #1 went on sale earlier this year, and it provides an alternative to the likes of the Volkswagen ID5. Read on for all you need to know.

  • New Smart #3 revealed
  • The second electric SUV from Smart
  • Styling cues from the #1
  • 12.3-inch infotainment system
  • May share motors with that car as well
  • Full reveal in November 2023
  • On sale in Spring next year

Following on from the #1, the new Smart #3 has been revealed. It’s a sleek coupe-SUV to provide an alternative to the likes of the Volkswagen ID5 and Kia EV6.

The design was revealed at Auto Shanghai, although there are no details on what’s powering this car. You’ll have to wait until November to find out what’s under the skin.

New Smart #3 design

Smart used to be synonymous with tiny two-seater city cars, however this new #3 is a rather large SUV. It carries over a lot of styling details from the smaller #1, although it has a more sleek coupe-esque shape than that car.

Up front it has a similar headlight design with triangular LEDs and a sleek-looking light strip across the bonnet. It also has a more sporty appearance than the #1, thanks to the aggressive styling of the lower bumper and large air intakes.

Down the side you have the obligatory massive alloy wheels, as well as that sloping roofline to set it apart from the #1. This new car is available in a variety of two-tone paint schemes, as well as a bright orange and a matte blue finish.

There’s a nice, big roof spoiler at the rear, as well as some slim, pixel-style rear lights. The light bar across the tailgate gives it a modern look as well.

New Smart #3 interior and infotainment

As with the exterior, the interior of the new Smart #3 takes a great deal of inspiration from the #1, the main takeaway being the tall centre console separating you from your passenger.

Sitting atop the dashboard is a 12.8-inch infotainment system, the same one you’ll find in the #1. It uses the same funky graphics as that car, and almost all of the car’s functions are controlled through it.

You get a 13-speaker Beats sound system, and the seats in this car look pretty sporty. They have the Brabus logo the back of the headrest as well, suggesting a performance version of the #3 is also on the cards.

New Smart #3 motors and batteries

No technical details have been announced for the new Smart #3. The #1 uses a 66kWh battery with up to 273 miles of range.

Expect the new Smart #3 to share some parts with the smaller #1 (pictured)

The #3 is a bigger car though, so it could use a larger 82kWh battery from the top-spec Volvo XC40 Recharge. That car has up to 311 miles of range, so the new Smart could get similar numbers.

Being owned by Geely, the same company that owns Volvo, the Smart #3 could be offered with a wide variety of motors and power outputs. The most likely starting point would be the 272hp motor from the Smart #1, and there may even be a Brabus version of the #3 with more than the 428hp you get in the Brabus #1.

When will the new Smart #3 go on sale?

The new Smart #3 will be revealed in full in November this year, with sales starting in the spring of 2024.

As for price, expect it to cost a fair bit more than the smaller Smart #1. Somewhere around the £40,000 mark is a safe bet.
