Drag race: Porsche 911 GT3 (992) vs GT3 RS (991.2)

August 25, 2021 by

Can the latest Porsche 911 GT3 match, or even beat, the monstrous GT3 RS it followed? Well, that’s what today’s drag race looks to find out.

For the chassis geeks out there, the GT3 you see here is of the latest ‘992’ generation of the 911, which followed on from the 991.2 — which this green monster of a GT3 RS is representing.

Until a new Porsche 911 GT3 RS comes along, this GT3 is the most hardcore version you can buy right now. It’s powered by a 4.0-litre naturally-aspirated flat-six engine producing 510hp and 470Nm, sent to the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

Funnily enough, it’s an almost identical engine and drivetrain setup as you’ll find in that GT3 RS — albeit the RS has 520hp.

The GT3 RS weighs less than the latest GT3 too. Albeit by 5kg, which is about the weight of a fat cat.

So the GT3 RS does have the win on paper, but then with the GT3 being a whole generation newer, there are the under-the-skin technological developments to take into account.

Which wins, then? Well, you’ll have to watch to find out…
