Is my BMW M5 Touring faster than its rivals from Audi, Mercedes and Porsche?

April 18, 2026 by

My BMW M5 daily driver is ballistically fast, but it’s not the only option if you’re after a big, luxurious family car which can also defy physics with its acceleration.

There are also alternatives from Audi, Mercedes and Porsche to consider, so I’m going to drag race my M5 Touring against them to find out which one is fastest. Let’s take a look at the stats.

My BMW M5 Touring

Let’s start with my car. The BMW M5 Touring has a 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which is assisted by an electric motor to make a combined 727hp and 1,000Nm of torque. This is sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

That’s a lot of power, but it’s also a very heavy car. It weighs a colossal 2,450kg. At least buying one of these will free up some weight from your wallet, because this car costs a whopping £140,000 as it sits.

Audi RS6 GT

This is the Audi RS6 GT, and it’s the swan song for this bonkers estate car before its hybrid-powered replacement is revealed later this year. Underneath that gorgeous livery is a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine with no electrical gubbins in sight.

It puts out 630hp and 850Nm of torque, which is fed to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox. It weighs 2,075kg, and cost £177,000 when it was new. Only 60 of these cars came to the UK, and this one belongs to Audi’s press fleet.

Mercedes-AMG GT Four-Door

Next up is the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S Four-Door. Like the Audi, it has a 4.0-litre, twin-turbocharged V8 engine with no hybridisation, and it puts out 640hp and 900Nm of torque.

It also has all-wheel drive and a nine-speed automatic gearbox The Mercedes is the lightest car here, tipping the scales at 2,045kg, and when it was last on sale in 2024 it cost just under £160,000.

Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid

Finally, we come to the toughest contender. The Porsche Panamera has a 4.0-litre, twin-turbocharged hybrid engine with 782hp and 1,000Nm of torque. This is sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox, and it weighs 2,365kg.

All that power comes at a price though, because the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid starts from £175,000. This particular car, with options, costs an eye-watering £200,000. That means the extras on this car cost the same as a well-specced Skoda Fabia.

What will happen?

As much as I’d like my car to win this, that Porsche is going to be really hard to beat. It’s the most powerful car here, it’s lighter than the BMW, and Porsches are renowned for launching like rocketships off the line.

But the stats on paper don’t tell the full story, and anything can happen out on the Carwow drag strip. Make sure you check out the video to see how this race pans out.
