Germany vs USA: Mercedes-AMG G63 takes on the Ford F-150 Raptor R in a drag race

Let’s say you’re after a big and brash V8 to show off on the high street. Your options are pretty limited here in the UK, but you could choose between these two.

There’s the Mercedes-AMG G63, a boxy off-roader which can trace its roots back to a utilitarian truck built for the military. Or, if you want to really stand out, you could import a Ford F-150 Raptor R.

But which should you go for? Well we’re going to find out with a good old-fashioned drag race. Let’s take a look at the stats.

Mercedes-AMG G63

The Mercedes is powered by a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 with 585hp and 850Nm of torque, and this is paired to a nine-speed automatic gearbox sending power to all four wheels.

It’s quite a heavy beast, tipping the scales at 2,550kg, and it’ll cost you £185,000. That’s a big chunk of change, but there aren’t many SUVs as cool as the G-Wagon, nor are there many which are as good off-road.

Ford F-150 Raptor R

If you somehow have looked at the G63 and think it’s too subtle, then you could import a Ford F-150 R. This gigantic American pickup truck has a 5.2-litre supercharged V8 with 720hp and 868Nm of torque.

This is sent to all four wheels via a 10-speed automatic gearbox, and the massive hunk of freedom weighs 2,699kg, or around 1,350 apple pies. The F150 is cheaper than the Mercedes as well, it’ll set you back £168,000.
