German track car drag race: Porsche 911 GT3 RS vs Mercedes-AMG GTR
May 24, 2025 by Mat Watson

When you think of a hardcore German sports car, you probably think of the Porsche 911 GT3 RS. I certainly did, that’s why I used to own one. But you also can’t forget about Mercedes-AMG’s offering – the GTR.
These two cars are designed to attack corners on the world’s most challenging racetracks, so a pootle up a drag strip shouldn’t see them break sweat. Which will complete the quarter mile faster though? That’s what I’m going to find out.
Porsche 911 GT3 RS
As a former GT3 RS owner, I’m very familiar with this car which is why I’ll be driving it. Slung out over the rear wheels is a 4.0-litre naturally-aspirated flat six with 525hp and 450Nm of torque.

This is sent to the rear wheels only via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox with launch control, and the GT3 RS tips the scales at 1,450kg. It also costs from £193,000.
Mercedes-AMG GTR
Racing Driver Sam is in the AMG GTR, and he has a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 585hp and 700Nm of torque. This is paired with a seven-speed automatic gearbox with launch control driving the rear wheels only.

The Mercedes is a bit heavier than the Porsche at 1,555kg, but it’s also quite a lot cheaper at £156,000.
What will happen?
On paper, the Mercedes should eke out a win here with its extra power, but it might not be that simple.
Not only is the Porsche lighter, in my experience it’s also easier to launch. AMGs tend to be a bit lairy off the line, whereas Porsches just catapult towards the horizon.
It should be a close race then, but you’ll have to watch the video to see what happens.
