Power is sent to all four wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, and the 918 tips the scales at 1,674kg. The price? Well this car today will set you back £1.3 million.

By comparison, the Bugatti Veyron looks like a bit of a bargain. This hero of the 2000s is worth £950,000, and for that you get an 8.0-litre quad-turbocharged W16 engine with 1,001hp and 1,250Nm of torque. It has all-wheel-drive and a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, and it weighs in at 1,888kg.

Weighing in at over a ton less than the Veyron, the Red Bull RB8 Formula 1 car comes in at 700kg. Powering it is a 2.4-litre naturally-aspirated V8, sending 800hp to the rear wheels only. There’s no traction control here either, so the launch is going to require a great deal of skill from the driver to keep it in the running.
