Mercedes-AMG GT R vs Lamborghini Huracan drag race – with a twist

I’m back on the Carwow drag strip again, and this time I’ll be driving a Mercedes-AMG GT R against a Lamborghini Huracan Evo.

On paper, that’s not much of a race because the Lamborghini is much more powerful. However, this AMG GT R has been fettled by Pure Tuning, and now it makes over 750hp.

Mercedes-AMG GT R

Under the bonnet of my Mercedes is a 4.0-litre town-turbocharged V8 which usually produces 858hp and 700Nm of torque. This car has upgraded downpipes and an engine tune, meaning it now has 756hp and 1,120Nm of torque.

This is sent to the rear wheels only via a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox with launch control, and the AMG GT R weighs in at 1,550kg. This car, plus all the upgrades, is worth around £100,000.

Lamborghini Huracan Evo Spider

The Lamborghini Huracan Evo Spider has a mid-mounted 5.2-litre naturally-aspirated V10 engine with 610hp and 560Nm of torque, which is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

Like the AMG, the Huracan is rear-wheel drive. It weighs in at 1,600kg, and this one costs £170,000.

Mercedes-AMG GT R vs Lamborghini Huracan: what will happen?

It’s going to be an interesting one. My Mercedes may have more power and less weight, but traction could be an issue. These cars may both be rear-wheel drive, but the Lamborghini is mid engined so it has more weight over the rear wheels.

The Huracan’s launch control system is also better than the AMGs, so it could get off the line more quickly.
