Mercedes GLA Range Gets AMG Power

Mercedes hasn’t even released the GLA-Class yet, but already its tuning arm AMG has endowed the compact crossover with a healthy dose of power. This is what happens when you put a 360 bhp engine in a practical family car…

So what am I looking at?

The fettle-smiths at AMG have worked their magic once again, this time making a smoking hot version of Mercedes’ compact crossover GLA class – the GLA 45 AMG

What’s new?

The powertrain. Currently found underneath Mercedes’ A-class and CLA-class range toppers, the GLA 45 AMG sports a 2.0, turbocharged, four cylinder petrol good for 360 hp and 330 lb-ft.

This kind of savagery would be too much for the commonly front-wheel drive GLA-class, so Mercedes’ 4Matic 4WD system is fitted as standard and the power is marshalled through the company’s 7-speed dual clutch transmission.

Most of the rest of the GLA range’s optional extra boxes – including AMG sports suspension and performance brakes – are ticked for this halo car version, but there’s still plenty of room for AMG exclusive equipment and trinkets.

How much will it cost me?

Full UK specifications and pricing haven’t yet been confirmed, with the car not scheduled to even make its show debut before next week’s Detroit exhibition. Expect, however, prices to start at approximately 42,000 – a 25% premium over the existing GLA 250 AMG Line model.

Any alternatives?

The 40k, premium, hot, compact crossover market is surprisingly sparse. Just about the only car it makes any kind of sense to cross-shop with the GLA 45 is the RS version of Audi’s Q3 crossover, but the GLA has performance and economy on its side compared to the RSQ3.

An unreleased alternative lurks in the shadows in the shape of Porsche’s new Macan. The 3.0 V6 Macan S particularly hits most of the same benchmarks, coming in at around the same price too.

In a line?

Exactly what Lewis Hamilton would use to take the kids and dogs out.
