New 400hp five-cylinder Cupra Formentor spotted: price, specs and release date
- 400hp Cupra Formentor spotted
- Expected to share RS Q3’s engine
- 2.5-litre five-cylinder unit
- 0-60mph in around four seconds
- On sale in late 2021/early 2022
- Likely to cost more than £50,000
The Cupra Formentor is a sporty SUV from SEAT’s spinoff performance brand, Cupra. The standard Formentor, with up to 310hp, is on sale now but a more powerful 400hp version has been spotted undergoing testing. This version will likely share a 2.5-litre five-cylinder engine with the Audi RS Q3.
The prototype in these pictures looks pretty much identical to the standard Formentor (from the front, at least) but don’t rule out a few cosmetic upgrades for the final production model.
Indeed, the only visual clues as to what lies beneath the undisguised prototype are the four diagonally stacked exhaust pipes instead of the standard car’s in-line design. But, the fact that this prototype was reportedly producing the unmistakable sound of a 2.5-litre 5-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine gave the game away.
Currently, the fastest Cupra Formentor you can buy comes with 310hp and takes 4.9 seconds to sprint from zero to 60 miles per hour. The upcoming 400hp version with its Audi RS Q3-derived engine should cover the same sprint in close to four seconds flat.
New Cupra Formentor price and release date
The 310hp Cupra Formentor will currently set you back £43,840. You can expect this new 400hp model to cost at least £50,000. It won’t arrive in showrooms until late 2021 or early 2022, so at least you have plenty of time to get saving…
