Mat Watson races a Toyota-powered BMW against a BMW-powered Toyota

Most of you fellow car nerds will know that the latest Toyota Supra is actually powered by a BMW straight-six engine, but today I’ve got a bit of role reversal for you.

I’m sitting in an E46 BMW M3, and it’s been fitted with a 2JZ engine from an old Toyota Supra. Let’s run through some stats.

2JZ-powered BMW M3

This BMW M3 has a 3.0-litre straight-six engine with around £30,000 worth of modifications. It has a massive single turbo in place of the twin-turbo setup it had from factory, a new ECU, bigger fuel injectors, a larger intercooler and a custom exhaust.

The result is 507hp and 678Nm of torque, and this is sent to the rear wheels only via a six-speed manual gearbox. The car weighs around 1,650kg, and it’s worth £45,000.

Mk4 Toyota Supra

Next to me on the start line is a Mk4 Toyota Supra, and it uses the same 3.0-litre engine as the BMW. This car is running the standard twin-turbo setup, but it is fitted with around £2,000 worth of mods including an ECU tune, custom exhaust and a new intake.

It has 406hp and 569Nm of torque, which is sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox. The car tips the scales at 1,570kg, and it’s worth around £36,000.

New Toyota Supra

Finally we come to the only car here with a BMW engine – the latest Toyota Supra. It uses the same engine as the BMW Z4, so a 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six with 340hp and 500Nm of torque.

Power is sent to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox with launch control, and the car weighs in at 1,495kg. When it was new, this car cost around £52,000.
