Drag race: the new BMW M2 battles its deadliest rivals
August 02, 2025 by Jamie Edkins

This is the updated BMW M2. It may look exactly the same as before, but it’s been given some more power to make sure it can keep up with the rest of the German performance cars out there.
But can it? Well to find out we’re going to drag race the new M2 against the Volkswagen Golf R, Audi RS3, Mercedes-AMG A45 S and, just to spice things up a bit, a Porsche Cayman GT4 RS.
Remember, you can buy a brand new or used car right here on Carwow. And you can sell your car, too. We’re here to help you through every step of your car-changing journey.
Let’s take a closer look at the stats…
New BMW M2

The BMW M2 has a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged straight-six engine with 480hp and 600Nm of torque, which is up from 460hp and 550Nm of torque in the old car.
This is sent to the rear wheels only via an eight-speed automatic gearbox. It weighs 1,730kg, and costs from just under £70,000.
Volkswagen Golf R

Next to the BMW we have the recently-updated Volkswagen Golf R. It’s powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine with 333hp and 420Nm of torque. That’s quite a bit less than the BMW, but it has all-wheel drive to help get off the line more quickly.
Power is delivered to the wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, and the Golf tips the scales at 1,550kg. It’s also much cheaper than the BMW at £46,000.
Mercedes-AMG A45 S

The Mercedes-AMG A45 S also has a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, only it puts out 421hp and 500Nm of torque – quite the increase compared to the Golf R but still down on the M2.
Like the VW it also has all-wheel drive, but it has an eight-speed automatic gearbox. It weighs 1,680kg, and costs a rather hefty £65,000.
Audi RS3

This is the Audi RS3 Saloon, and it’s got a 2.5-litre turbocharged five-cylinder engine warbling away under the bonnet putting out 400hp and 500Nm of torque. Like the Volkswagen and the Mercedes, the RS3 has all-wheel drive.
It also has a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, and weighs in at 1,640kg. To park an Audi RS3 Saloon on your driveway, you’ll have to part with £62,500.
Porsche Cayman GT4 RS

Finally we have a bit of a wildcard: the Porsche Cayman GT4 RS. This is a proper racecar for the road, powered by a screaming 4.0-litre naturally-aspirated flat-six engine with 500hp and 450Nm of torque.
This drives the rear wheels only via a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, and it comes in at a featherweight 1,415kg. The Porsche is by far the most expensive car here though, wearing a £125,000 price tag.
