Mat’s behind the wheel of the entry-level M car today, the all-new M2. Under the bonnet it has a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged straight-six engine with 460hp and 550Nm of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheel via an eight-speed automatic gearbox, although the M2 is also available with a manual transmission, and it weighs in at 1,725kg. The price? Well this new M2 will set you back £64,745.

That’s a bargain compared to the new BMW XM. This plug-in hybrid SUV will make a £148,060 hole in your wallet. For this you get a 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8, mated to an electric motor for a combined 653hp and 800Nm of torque. This makes it the most powerful M car ever made. The XM has an eight-speed automatic gearbox and all-wheel-drive, however the added weight of the battery means it tips the scales at a whopping 2,710kg.
