German supercar drag race: new Mercedes-AMG GT vs rivals

The new Mercedes-AMG GT is one of our favourite German sports cars, but how does it compare to the Audi R8 and Porsche 911 in a good old-fashioned Carwow drag race?

1) Mercedes-AMG GT

Mat’s behind the wheel of the new Mercedes-AMG GT today. This is the full-fat 63 S version, meaning there’s a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine under the bonnet with 585hp and 800Nm of torque, over 120hp more than the old AMG GTS.

The new GT also has all-wheel drive, unlike the old car, and power is sent through a nine-speed multi-clutch gearbox. It is pretty heavy for a slinky supercar though at 2,130kg, and it’ll set you back £165,000.

2) Audi R8 GT

Next to the Mercedes we have the Audi R8 GT, a final swansong to the R8 before it disappears from showrooms forever. It has a 5.2-litre naturally-aspirated V10 mounted behind the driver with 620hp and 565Nm of torque.

That’s exactly the same power as the standard R8 V10, but unlike that car the GT is rear-wheel drive – so racing driver Sam is going to have his work cut out getting this thing off the line quickly. It’s considerably lighter than the AMG though, tipping the scales at 1,570kg, and it’s also a lot more expensive at £200,000.

3) Porsche 911 Turbo S

Finally then we have an old Carwow favourite. The Porsche 911 Turbo S has proved itself as something of a drag race legend thanks to its ability to launch perfectly every time, regardless of the weather conditions.

It’s powered by a rear-mounted 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged flat-six with 650hp and 800Nm of torque, sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox. It weighs in at 1,640kg, and it’ll also make your wallet £180,600 lighter.
