The Cupra Formentor is due for a facelift, and the new performance SUV has been spotted testing on-track. Read on for all you need to know.

  • New Cupra Formentor spotted
  • Styling tweaks for the sporty SUV
  • New plug-in hybrid possible
  • Potential for more powerful 2.0-litre engine
  • One sale next year

This is the facelifted Cupra Formentor, and the brand’s sporty SUV is getting a few styling tweaks to keep it looking fresh.

This alternative to the Volkswagen T-Roc R and BMW X1 M35i may also get more power, as well as new interior tech.

New Cupra Formentor design

The Cupra Formentor is already a sporty-looking small SUV, and this facelift looks like it’ll build on this.

The main change you can see up front is the new headlights. They’re slightly slimmer than the current units, with a new LED daytime running light design. The grille also looks like it’ll be redesigned, with this prototype appearing to have a two-part shape.

There’s not much to report down the side. The Formentor still has a sporty coupe shape with a sloping roofline, and these wheels appear to be new as well. This is the most powerful version of the Formentor, as you can tell by the quad tailpipes. The lower bumper is likely to get a more aggressive-looking design, and the full-width light bar is here to stay.

New Cupra Formentor engines and performance

You can expect the engine range for the new Cupra Formentor to remain similar to the current car’s. As it stands, you can have a 1.5-litre petrol, a 1.4-litre plug-in hybrid and a sporty 2.0-litre petrol with 245hp.

The 1.5-litre petrol is likely to stay the same, so you’ll have 150hp and a choice of a manual or automatic gearbox. You might be able to get a new plug-in hybrid, courtesy of the forthcoming Skoda Kodiaq, using a 1.5-litre petrol engine with over 60 miles of electric range.

As for the 2.0-litre petrol, it could be tweaked to get some more performance out of it. It’s the same basic engine as you’ll find in the Volkswagen T-Roc R, and that car has 300hp. The updated Formentor may get closer to this figure.

When will the new Cupra Formentor go on sale?

Expect to see the new Cupra Formentor make its debut early next year, with prices taking a slight hike over the current car’s. A starting price of around £35,000 is likely.
