Drag race: USA vs Germany as the Corvette Z06 takes on a Porsche 911 GT3

The Chevrolet Corvette is one of only two American muscle cars which you can buy in the UK with right-hand drive – the other being the Ford Mustang. This bright yellow Z06 which I’m sitting in today costs a whopping £209,000.

And that’s £36,000 more than the Porsche 911 GT3 which is parked next to me, but which will be faster in a drag race? Well, of course, I’m about to find out. Let’s take a closer look at the stats.

Chevrolet Corvette Z06

My Corvette is powered by a 5.5-litre naturally-aspirated V8, and it puts out 646hp and 595Nm of torque. This drives the rear wheels only via an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox with launch control.

The car weighs in at 1,714kg, and prices start from £183,000. However, this car has the Z07 package which adds carbon wheels, carbon ceramic brakes, bespoke Michelin track tyres and some extra carbon fibre aero parts. This brings the total cost to £209,000.

Porsche 911 GT3

Next to me is a Porsche 911 GT3, which on paper is on the back foot. It has a 4.0-litre naturally-aspirated flat six engine putting out 510hp and 450Nm of torque, and this goes to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox with launch control.

The GT3 may be down on power, but it’s also lighter. It tips the scales at 1,479kg. It’s also way cheaper than the Corvette, with prices starting from £158,200. Even this car, which is packing quite a few options, comes to £173,000.

My predictions

I have 150hp more than the Porsche, but the 911 is renowned for its excellent launch control system. It’s also the lighter car, but I still don’t think that’ll be enough to offset the power difference.
