Is the Fiat 600 a good car?

The Fiat 600 is a stylish compact SUV that’s perfect for people who like the idea of the 500 city car, but need something bigger. It has similarly characterful styling but more space inside.

As such, it’s a bit like a Big Chill fridge – retro looks, modern technology, and enough space to store your fruit and veg.

If you’re looking for a small SUV, there are plenty of similarly priced alternatives to the Fiat 600, such as the Toyota Yaris Cross, Peugeot 2008 and Skoda Kamiq. There’s also the fantastic value Citroen C5 Aircross, which is considerably bigger.

Under the bonnet sits a mild hybrid petrol engine, though unlike most similar layouts the 600 can travel very short distances on electricity to reduce fuel consumption. It’s not quite a proper hybrid like the Yaris Cross, but official fuel economy of 58.9mpg means running costs should be pretty low.

It’s not the most practical small SUV, but the Fiat 600 certainly doesn’t lack charm

That said, if being cheap to run is important to you, there’s an all-electric version that’s actually not that much more expensive than this hybrid model. We’ve reviewed the Fiat 600e separately.

Although we won’t drive the hybrid until they come to the UK later this year, we already know that the Fiat 600 offers decent space and practicality inside, though there are roomier alternatives. The boot’s bigger than a Vauxhall Mokka’s, but the Peugeot 2008, Skoda Kamiq and Toyota Yaris Cross offer more capacity.

It’s pretty roomy up front though, and the seats are really comfortable. However, there are quite a few scratchy plastics around the cabin that make it feel a bit cheap, and the infotainment screen isn’t particularly sharp nor responsive.

We’ll reserve full judgement until we’ve been behind the wheel of the Fiat 600 with its hybrid engine. However, in the meantime you can find out how much you could save by checking out Carwow’s Fiat 600 deals, as well as great prices on other Fiat models. You can also take a look at used Fiats from our network of trusted dealers, and sell your car when the time comes.
