Is the Renault 4 E-Tech a good car?
The Renault 4 E-Tech is a bit like a difficult second album, because this eye-catching electric car follows on from the hugely popular Renault 5 E-Tech, with its 1980s styling and the affordable price tag.
However, Renault has boxed clever by basing its latest retro-look electric car on the style of the original 1960s Renault, which was its biggest-selling model ever and which has its own iconic status. It may not quite look as cool as the sportier 5 E-Tech, but it has a charm all of its own.
The shape is taller and boxier than the 5 E-Tech, much to the benefit of space inside, but there are some of the same retro touches. The LED lights ape the round lamps of the original, while instead of the old chrome-and-plastic grille, there’s a runaround LED trim and light-up badge. At the back there are gorgeous little lozenge-shaped brake lights, with LED bulbs, divided into three sections, just like the one from the sixties.
Renault 4 E-Tech: electric range, battery and charging data
Range: 250 miles
Efficiency: 4.8 miles per kWh
Battery size: 52kWh
Max charge speed: 100kW
Charge time AC: 7hrs 47mins, 0-100% at 7kW
Charge time DC: 30mins, 15-80% at 100kW
Charge port location: Left front
Power output: 150hp
Inside you get two digital screens for instruments and infotainment, and a retro-look quilted effect on the dash. And practicality is better than in the 5 E-Tech because it’s longer and taller so actual adults should be able to fit in the back seats.
There’s also a bigger boot, which stretches to 420 litres, and still has extra space under the boot floor for stashing your charging cables. Better yet, the boot has an ultra-low load height, so not only is it easy to load up big items, you can also use it as a picnic seat.
The Renault 4 E-Tech is an appealing recipe – the retro charm that makes the 5 E-Tech so cool but with more space
Other lovely touches include the option of denim-style seat upholstery while later in the year there’ll be the option of a full-length canvas sunroof.
Power comes from a 150hp electric motor, while the 52kWh battery gives a range of up to 250 miles. The battery can charge at up to 100kW on DC fast charging power, meaning a roughly 30-minute stop for an 80% charge.

The Renault 4 E-Tech is well-priced among electric cars, with only the top-spec model costing more than £30,000 – it’s priced similarly to the BYD Dolphin but has a bigger boot. You get 18-inch alloy wheels and a 10.1-inch central infotainment system as standard, but you need to upgrade from the base model to get the recycled upholstery.
